DVD Verdict Review - Bastard Out Of Carolina
Bastard Out Of Carolina is based on the novel by Dorothy Allison, was written for the screen by Anne Meredith and marked the directorial debut of actress Anjelica Huston (The Addams Family, Addams Family Values, The Grifters).
The bastard of the title, her very entrance to the world is marred by a near tragedy when Anney goes flying through a truck windshield after an accident on the way to the delivery room.
Bastard Out Of Carolina deals with a subject matter that is distasteful, to the say the least and is unafraid to show the abuse inflicted upon little Bone.

"The Politics of They": Dorothy Allison's Bastard out of Carolina
Bastard Out of Carolina, she offers an uncompromising vision of the ugliness and injustice of poverty.
Bastard Out of Carolina, Allison critiques not only two of the most damaging bourgeois myths about so-called “white trash”--their characteristic illegitimacy and incest--but also the ideology of motherhood underpinning a sex/gender system that cuts across social classes.
Allison’s novel plays out the disastrous consequences of this system of sexual exchange and the patriarchal kinship system it produces, a system that relegates women to a relatively less powerful position and requires the suppression of feminocentric systems of kinship like the one we see among the Boatwright women.

“Bastard Out of Carolina” is a gritty, coming-of-age drama set in the 1950s South about a young girl named Bone who loses her innocence through the sexual and physical abuse of her stepfather while becoming disillusioned with her mother’s ability as a parent clinging on to her relatives.
Adapted into a script by Anne Meredith and directed by Huston, “Bastard Out of Carolina” was originally made for Ted Turner’s TNT channel but the end result was something far more raw and intense that makes the film an uneasy experience to watch.

Her riveting, semi-autobiographical first novel, "Bastard Out of Carolina," portrays a dirt-poor Southern childhood in a family notorious for its violent, hard-drinking men and trouble-prone women.
The success of "Bastard" lifted the lifelong outsider from relative obscurity and penury to literary fame and middle-class comfort, much to her amusement.

Bastard out of Carolina, Constant Reader Discussion
BOOC was outstanding, as brutally honest as Kaye Gibbons' ELLEN FOSTER and beautifully written.Bone, a young girl who seeks legitimacy within her large extended family of self-described white trash, struggles with the dual feelings of revulsion and embarassment at her family's antics and a fierce pride and affinity with those she loves.
That silky Carolina voice is magical, and the writing is, in the first chapter anyway (all I've read--or, more accurately, had read to me by the author), elegiac and breathtaking.
BOOC was a brave book...I've mentioned to you before my tendency to want to impose my own sensibilities on fictional characters (a failure on my part, to be sure) and BOOC is a good case in point.

Ron Eldard as Glen Waddell in "Bastard Out Of Carolina"
Most important, ''Bastard'' is not some lurid victim-of-the-week movie, but an intelligent and sensitive work, which recognizes that any story of abuse is also the story of the lives that allowed it to happen.
Of course, Huston’s unflinching look at the unhappy life of young Ruth Anne Boatwright in 1950s South Carolina also won the novice director plenty of ink when the project was picked up by Showtime: In the subsequent publicity flurry, she won points for artistic integrity, while the cable network got to crow about its cojones.
In "Bastard Out of Carolina," Ron Eldard plays Glen Waddell, a blue-collar worker who woos a lovelorn waitress (Jennifer Jason Leigh), marries her and then, giving in to his demons, proceeds to molest and beat his stepdaughter (Jena Malone) routinely.
