Bastardo, Bastardo Wine and Bastardo Grape Growing Regions - Appellation America
Bastardo is just one of the many allowable varieties for the production of Port - Portugal's famed fortified wine from grapes sourced from the steep terraced vineyards of the Duoro Valley.
The Bastardo grape is generally not as highly regarded as other Port varieties, such as Touriga Nacional and Touriga Francesa.
Bastardo's greatest virtue is the high natural sugar content of its grapes -- a desirable characteristic for fortified wine production.

It hails from the aristocratic vineyards of northern Italy and is, in principle, £20-a-bottle, 5-star vintage Barolo, made seductively smooth through an inspired union with the noble Sangiovese grape of Tuscany.
The great news is that such marriages are frowned upon by the Italian wine authorities (hence the Bastardo of the title and humble vino da tavola status).
Italian wine laws dictate that Nerello cannot display the vintage on the bottle, but we can reveal that the grapes used are from the 2000 vintage.
