Capital of the bastion: an imaginary line connecting the point of the bastion and the point of the corresponding angle of the polygon of fortification.
In a regular bastion it was one of the two sides of the bastion, which formed a salient angle pointing outwards and which was situated on the lines of defense.
Flank of the bastion: the section of the bastion lying between the face and the curtain, from which the ditch in front of the adjacent curtain and the flank and face of the opposite bastion were defended.

When the bastion and moat are filled in, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is requiring that the contractor protect them with a "geo-textile" lining; use only clean, uniform fill and not disturb the configuration.
If the bastion can't be saved at this time, it shouldn't be buried without a full written report that documents its early history, its reconstruction, the decision to bury it and the dissenting voices.

Point State Park is at the tip of Pittsburgh’s “Golden Triangle.” It commemorates and preserves the strategic and historic heritage of the area during the French and Indian War (1754 - 1763).

Friend of the Bastion Lauren Bishop was on emcee duties (we hear she is the only female to be hired by the club thus far), and SNLer Darrell Hammond was headlining.
The Bastion ran into Mike Holmes and had a few beers with him during Darrell's second set, where we got down to some serious discussion on the state of comedy in Chicago and the future of current collaborations.
How fortuitous that just this morning the Bastion was on the treadmill at the gym watching The Blues Brothers on Comedy Central (not so funny with no sound and just closed captioning, by the way) and thinking about Chicago comedy alum, and possible future contributions by their offspring.

In 1778, Anthony Wayne was sent by Washington to dislodge the British from Stony Point on the Hudson River.
The fort was located at the top of a very steep, rocky hill, surrounded on three sides by water and accessible by land only through a marsh which overflowed daily with the tide.
One precaution he took was his order that all his men unload their weapons and rely on bayonets, so that an inadvertant shot would not warn the British of the Americans' approach.

A plan to fill the sunken area surrounding the 1960s reconstruction of Fort Pitt's Music Bastion in Point State Park is drawing fire from people who say it should be preserved.
While the 2004 master plan calls for outlining the bastion walls in the grass, as was done with Fort Duquesne, Lang said that won't provide a sense of the bastion's vertical scale.
"The reconstruction of the bastion is too young to be considered an important part of the historic aspect of the park" according to the state's history code, so no special review is required, said Bill Callahan of the commission's Bureau for Historic Preservation.

St Phillip was a brick and earth bastion fort with no casements.
It was star shaped, and had a bomb proof citadel in the center, which was destroyed during the battle of April 5, 1862.

The right-hander known as “Broken Board” at Bastion Point is recognised around the world and is used regularly by more than 60 local surfers and many hundreds more who visit each year.
Bastion Point is unique in that it is one of a handful of consistent surf-breaks on Victoria's Gippsland coast, and one of Victoria’s few waves that are sheltered in the frequent southerly winds experienced along Australia’s southern coast.

Follow the wall to the left (ditch in front is a man made moat) The thicket above the wall is the southeast bastion (point of the star).
To the right of the emplacement is an 1862 era powder magazine, and just above it on the southwest bastion are the remains of an 1862 gun emplacement.
The 1898 gun emplacement was at the center of the fort facing due south between the bastions.

On the Triton Bastion there used to be a windmill that drew up seawater to be sprayed from carts to keep the dust down on the city streets.
A series of other bastions are encountered, as well as the tomb of a Muslim saint, before you arrive back at your starting point.
