Recovery of neodymium/didymium values from bastnaesite ores - Patent 5338520
In the case of bastnaesite, as described in Deco Trefoil, p.9, (November-December, 1967), a precalcination of the mineral may be employed, which makes it possible to solubilize only a part of the cerium with the mixture of the other rare earths during the subsequent recovery operation using hydrochloric acid.
The leaching of bastnaesite with a solution of nitric acid enables the selective solubilization of the trivalent rare earths to the exclusion of the cerium values, the soluble traces of which are principally in tetravalent form.
The first stage of the process of the invention entails calcining the bastnaesite at a temperature sufficiently high to transform the trivalent rare earths into a form capable of being solubilized in the subsequent nitric acid leaching step and converting the cerium into a form less soluble than the transformed trivalent rare earths.

Processes for reacting bastnaesite with metal oxides - Patent 5422332   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Bastnaesite materials and Mg[A] (and/or Al[B]) materials can be chemically reacted by use of reactions wherein a Al[B] ingredient such as alumina is made into a sol by use of a mono-protonic acid before Mg[A] (and/or Al[B]) materials is (are) reacted with the bastnaesite material.
However, bastnaesite compositions have not been widely used as SO.sub.x additive materials because there are far better SO.sub.x catalyst materials (e.g., ceria, vanadia, etc.) and because bastnaesite is not a good long term absorbent because it is not easily regenerated under those conditions found in a fluid catalytic cracking unit or its catalyst regenerator unit.
In effect, the heavier bastnaesite particles and the lighter spinel particles were "glued together" in the form of a composite particle which is held together by one or more catalyst binder material(s) in order that the resulting composite particles have a density better suited for fluidization.

 Mountain Pass Rare Earth Mine
The "ore" was identified as the rare earth fluorocarbonate bastnaesite.
The ore consists of 60% carbonate (calcite, dolomite, siderite and ankerite), 20% sulfate (barite and celestite), 10% bastnaesite (rare earth fluorocarbonate) and 10% silicate phases (chiefly quartz).
Bastnaesite is the principle ore mineral, but minor monazite and perhaps apatite are also recovered in the milling process.

- Monazite, bastnaesite, xenotime and loparite, the primary ores, generally enriched by means of various physical processes (gravimetry, flotation, magnetic separation), are pulverized more or less finely into 50 mm to 1 mm grains, then chemically attacked by acid or basic reagents.
A first process consists of precalcinating the bastnaesite in order to oxidize the cerium which is in an insoluble acid form.
This process consists of attacking ground bastnaesite with concentrated sulfuric acid in a furnace at 300-400 °C. The rare earth sulfates obtained are then dissolved in water.

The adsorption of sodium oleate and potassium octyl-hydroxamate onto the rare-earths minerals monazite and bastnaesite was investigated through microflotation experiments, zeta potential determinations and infrared spectroscopy.
The monazite and bastnaesite samples were purified in the laboratory reaching, respectively, final grades of 68.7 and 45.3% RE + ThO
The results confirm that sodium oleate chemisorbs onto bastnaesite and suggest a physical adsorption mechanism of this reagent onto monazite.

 Rare Earths
Monazite sand, a by-product of heavy-mineral processing, is the most important mineral source of the rare-earth group.
Deposits of the minerals bastnaesite and xenotime are also important sources of certain rare earths.
The rare earths were once scientific curiosities, but modern methods of separation and new applications, particularly in the fields of atomic energy and metals research, make them commercially valuable.

Prior to a couple of years ago, bastnaesite was something that was only found as crusts, or at some localities as small crystals, such as those from France and Germany.
If you look closely, you can see what appears to be astrophyllite inclusions, typical of the bastnaesites form this area.
I have never seen another group of bastnaesite crystals like it, from Trimouns, Pakistan, or anywhere else for that matter.

Bastnaesite was first discovered in 1966 in the Mountains of Eastern Sayan, Russia.
Bastnaesite is found as platy to coarse masses and crystals, and is a source of rare-earth elements, including Gadolinium, Samarium, and Neodymium.

Lincoln County has yielded a variety of metals and minerals: gold, coal, iron, lead, copper, zinc, fluorite, bastnaesite, gypsum, tungsten.
Lesser districts, such as the Oscuro, Jicarilla, and Schelerville, have produced gold, copper, and other metals intermittently in the past.
Mining was revived during WW II and later years to produce iron, fluorspar, and bastnaesite in previously known districts, but mining is now practically at a standstill.

REE's evidently were the first ore elements introduced, at about 555 Ma, along with P and F. The solutions containing these elements had random spatial and time distribution and produced disseminated ores containing monazite or bastnaesite or mixtures of these two major REE minerals.
During the peak periods of ore formation, REE's, Fe, P (to form monazite and apatite), Na, Si (to form aegirine augite), F (to form bastnaesite and fluorite), and Ba (to form barite) were brought in by different hydrothermal solutions in order to produce the wide variety of banded ores.
Na, K, and Si (to form alkali amphiboles) were also introduced during the peak and waning phases of REE mineralization, but deposited in different parts of the orebodies than the above assemblage.
