The county had 596 farms in 1860, and livestock raising was growing; the number of cattle increased from about 12,000 in 1850 to over 40,000 in 1860.
By 1980 the county population had risen to 24,726 and was soon to surpass the 1900 high of 26,845.
In the early 1990s, residents of Bastrop County were coping with the challenges of growth brought on by the suburban development of nearby Austin and were seeking further opportunities for agricultural and industrial diversification.

Bastrop, county seat of Bastrop County, is located in the center of the county, about thirty miles southeast of downtown Austin.
Bastrop served as a business, commercial, and political center for an area that stretched far beyond Bastrop County; it was the place where settlers rallied for retaliation and forted up for protection when Indian depredations occurred in the vicinity.
In the 1920s the Bastrop area was the scene of oil drilling, and between 1928 and 1935 lumber operations were revived; a Bastrop mill produced thirty million board feet of lumber annually during those years.

History: Bastrop State Park is 5,926 total acres; approximately 30 miles southeast of Austin in Bastrop County.
The park was acquired by deeds from the city of Bastrop and private owners from 1933 to 1935; the park opened in 1937.
Directions: The park is one mile east of Bastrop on Texas 21, also accessible from the east on Texas 71 or by way of Buescher State Park along Park Road 1.

In 1837, after the revolution, the name was changed back to Bastrop and given to both the town and the new county.
Bastrop is the site of what are known as the "Lost Pines of Texas".
The first edition of The Bastrop Advertiser and County News was published on March 1,1853, giving it claim to being the oldest continuously published weekly in the state.

May 24, 1838 to January 24, 1840, shows the borders of Bastrop County to contain parts of present day Blanco, Burnet, Williamson, Travis, Hays, Comal, Caldwell, Bastrop, Lee, Gonzales and Fayette counties.

Prisoners were unable to spend all of their script and some at Camp Wallace in Texas City donated $440.00 to the local YMCA who had given them books.
The Bastrop museum files also contain a letter from 1993 wherein a former POW thanks the Bastrop Historical Society for information they furnished him and enclosed two snapshots of a German funeral at Camp Swift.
Most but not all of the graves are visible due to the depression in the soil where they were evidently exhumed for return to Germany or else became cougar chow.
