Bataan, Luzon, Philippine Islands, was the scene of heroic resistance by American and Filipino defenders against an overwhelming Japanese invading force during the initial phase of America's participation in World War II.
Bataan returned to the United States, arriving at New York 17 October 1945, and was assigned to "Magic Carpet" duty.
Bataan continued operating between Japan and Korea throughout the summer of 1952 carrying personnel and supplies to the fighting area and launching strikes against the enemy.

Most of the Filipino and (North American republic containing 50 states - 48 conterminous states in North America plus Alaska in northwest North America and the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific Ocean; achieved independence in 1776) United States forces defending the country were rapidly overrun or forced to retreat.
Meanwhile, Allied forces elsewhere in the Philippines fought on, and the column of prisoners marching from Bataan was accidentally shelled by US guns defending (The peninsula and island in the Philippines where Japanese forces besieged American forces in World War II; United States forces surrendered in 1942 and recaptured the area in 1945) Corregidor.

USS Bataan, an 11,000-ton Independence class small aircraft carrier built at Camden, New Jersey, was begun as the light cruiser Buffalo (CL-99).
During April-June 1944, Bataan took part in attacks on Japanese positions in New Guinea, the Caroline, Mariana and Bonin Islands and in the Battle of the Philippine Sea.
Bataan recommissioned in May 1950, and was soon involved in transporting aircraft to the Korean war zone.

BATAAN's keel was laid August 31, 1942 by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation of Camden, New Jersey.
The plans were originally intended to be the light cruiser USS BUFFALO, but as the war in the Pacific progressed, the blueprints were altered to meet the requirements for additional carriers in the arena.
BATAAN arrived in the Korean Operations Area December 15, 1950.

He reluctantly left Bataan on March 11th with the proclamation "I shall return." General Jonathan M. Wainwright, U.S. Army, immediately assumed command of the forces on the island of Corregidor off the southern tip of the Bataan peninsula.
The odds against the American-Filipino troops remaining on Bataan became overwhelming, and on April 9, 1942, with face in palm, Major General King surrendered all forces on the peninsula.
The Bataan "Death March", recognized as one of the greatest inhumanities of WWII, is also one of the greatest displays of heroism and human spirit on the part of those who did survive.

The result of this emergency program was that the CVLs found themselves in the 'no man's land' between the fast fleet carriers, with which they had high speed in common, and the somewhat smaller escort carriers, combining the disadvantages of both types.
The hangar deck and flight deck were strengthened to take twenty heavy aircraft; two of the four smokestacks were removed to improve stability; and a light electronics mast was fitted between the two remaining stacks.
These carriers were originally classified as CVs, but this designation was changed to CVL, a code especially introduced for them, during their construction.

Laid down as light cruiser 29 Dec 1941, reordered as carrier, renamed and redesignated CV 26 31 March 1942, launched 28 Feb 1943, commissioned as carrier 17 June 1943.
Decommissioned 5 Aug 1989 at New Orleans for preservation by Cabot/Dedalo Foundation, but preservation efforts failed and the ship was towed to Port Isabel, TX 18 October 1997 in preparation for scrapping at Brownsville, TX; moved to Brownsville for scrapping 9 August 1998.

The museum served cake and punch to the men of the Bataan outside the front door of the small museum.

It is the USS Bataan (CVL-29), converted from the model of the USS Independence from Revell.
And it is not all, the identification numbers (CVL-29) are white in the Independence but for the Bataan, a top picture tell me that it must a darkest color.

Upon hearing the news that the USS Bataan LHD-5 was going to spend 4 days in Boston for the fourth of July holiday festivities, I immediately wrote to Captain Tyson and asked for the opportunity to board the ship in Boston along with a guest.
My old ship, the USS Bataan CVL-29, had been built for air craft landings and take-offs during World War ll, while this new ship has incorporated the very latest technology for more modern warfare equipment.
Captain Tyson is, in fact, Captain Nora Tyson, Commander of the USS Bataan LDH-5.
