Bataan attributes that end to his recording career as a combination of several factors, not the least of which was a general weariness with the pressures of the music industry but also a desire to spend more time with his wife and young children.

The circumstances on Bataan were bleak, and this film does an excellent job describing those circumstances, even though it was filmed during the war on a soundstage and before an accurate analysis of the Battle could be made.
This movie occasionally decides to have some dramatic combat scenes in it, but they are usually cover for a hideous plot to get the girl back on screen.
The old war movie Battle of the Bulge is a big steaming pile of crap as far as history goes, but this is actually worse.

War movies can be a tricky recipe to pull off because they've been done so often and fall into cliches sooo easily.
This film is totally unselfconscious in how it deals with the war, in one scene it features real Bataan POWs marching in a parade and introduces them documentary style with a narrator, and it hired Filipino extras and actors for important roles.
It is certainly not the greatest movie but it shows you a kind of movies that has been shot in the 40's and the 50's.

The movie is an obvious recruiting effort to gin up patriotism on the home front and spur enlistments but Bataan really was a horrible chapter in the history of the United States.
The Bataan story and cast presented here was fictional, but only in the sense that it gave a general idea of the living hell these troops were subjected to and perished under.
The movie was shot on a soundstage that stood in for the Philippine jungle and all activity took place in that one set, the site of the ravine where the bridge stood.

In the love story (that seems to be required in any movie with a mostly male cast), Margaret (Connie Nielsen) runs the underground that smuggles food and medicine into the camp - she and Gibson are in love, but have never had a chance to do anything about it.
The movie takes a long time building up to the raid - trying to tell too many stories, instead of focusing on one or two.
This is like an old-fashioned war movie, but it's lacking the drama it should have for such a momentous occasion.

Bataan keeps going as long as a man is left, yep, the volunteers never retreat.
This movie was obviously designed to get people to sign up for the service but it was done with tact and respect and earns four stars as a fine piece of entertainment.
The second movie stars John Wayne, who I usually like, but the treatment is heavy handed and makes the Filipinos out to be less than full participants in their fight for independence.

Anyway, the POWs in the movie are survivors of the Bataan Death March where many American and Filipino soldiers were killed and died from the roughness.
Earlier in the movie, they showed the actual plan of action that they would take and to see it all completed was fun to watch from a general tactical standpoint even though it wasn’t at all the most complex, but it obviously wasn’t meant to be that by the filmmakers.
Movies rarely scare me or leave any real lasting impression of doom or loss (except maybe documentaries exposing the injustices of our government now and throughout history), but zombie movies have a real sense of doom.

The Call Bureau Cast Service lists Lynne Carver and Dorothy Morris as "Nurses", but they were not identifiable in the movie, although one nurse is seen from the rear and another in long-shot.
For a war movie, this was a bit unusual in that almost the whole film took part in one place.
Taylor was the best in this movie "army" and Walker was the annoying character, playing an extremely young and generally stupid Navy guy (don't ask) who never stopped talking in this irritating voice.

War movies from the 40s and early 50s are a little corny, very sentimental and quite glorious.
The Sands of Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal Diary, Wake Island and Bataan are four films that jump to mind that represent this era in War Film history for me. Certainly the movies of the 60s like The Bridge on the River Kwai (a 1957 film) though gritty, were more artsy.
Yes these movies were real to the little boy that I was when I watched and rewatched them on that snowy fl and white TV screen, some time before now.

It's early 1942 in the Philippines and Sergeant Bill Dane (Robert Taylor) with a mixed bag of semi-volunteers are given the assignment of blowing up a bridge which would otherwise be a primary crossing point for the invading Japanese army as it races south.

Although it is difficult to spoil a movie based on fact it is not how we do business and since I encourage everyone to see this movie I will close the review portion.
Thanks to stories from my Grandfather who was in the Philippines during this time and the documentaries on PBS and the History Channel, I will always remember his and their sacrifice to provide the blanket of freedom we lay beneath each day.
The best line in the movie is a quote that defined the dedication of the men and women from that era; Never before have so many given so much, and complained so little.
