  ADW: Emydidae: Information
Osteological characters, such as the construction of the mandible and articulations of the cervical vertebrae also distinguish the two subfamilies.
Some authors have felt these differences worthy of family status for the two groups (Emydidae and Bataguridae).
In this configuration, the Batagurids are placed in closer association with the Testudinidae in a group called the Testudinoidae, which excludes the Emydidae.

ETI - Turtles of the World: Temperature-dependent sex determination
With the exception of the genera Platemys (XY, Chelidae), Staurotypus (XY, Kinosternidae), and Siebenrockiella (XY) and Kachuga smithii (ZW) (Bataguridae), turtles lack heteromorphic sex chromosomes (either XY male heterogamety, or ZW female heterogamety); their mechanism for sex determination is different than in humans.
Pattern I, found in some Bataguridae, and the Carettochelyidae, Cheloniidae, Dermochelyidae, Emydidae, and Testudinidae, has a single transition zone of temperature below which incubation yields nearly or totally 100% males and above which only females are produced.
Pattern I occurs chiefly in turtles in which the adult females are larger than adult males; Pattern II is found mainly in turtles with females smaller than males or in which body size is not dimorphic.

 Turtle Molecular Phylogeny
However, the independent support for the Testudinoidea by both the morphological and molecular data sets strengthens the interpretation of the monophyly of this group.
Within the Testudinoidae strong support for the monophyly of the Bataguridae rests entirely on the molecular data set.
Hirayama (1985) suggested that the Bataguridae may be paraphyletic with respect to the monophyletic Testudinidae, whereas Lamb and Lydeard (1994) found weak support for a paraphyletic Testudinidae with respect to batagurids.

TxSpace at Texas A&M University Libraries: Item 1969.1/193
Specimens of 6 species of threatened, vulnerable, and endangered turtles (Cuora amboinensis, Cyclemys dentata, Heosemys grandis, Orlitia borneensis, Pyxidea mouhotii, and Siebenrockiella crassicollis) belonging to family Bataguridae, were confiscated in Hong Kong, China on 11 December 2001 by international authorities.
Endohelminth studies on these turtle species are scarce, and this study provided a rare opportunity to examine a limited number of specimens for endohelminths.
Based on known life cycles, parasites found provided an indication of food preferences of these 6 turtle species that support previous studies of the turtles' feeding habits.

 Re: Emydidae
The Asian pond turtles are a separate and valid family, however, the current name (see David 1994) is Geoemydidae by priority of the genus Geoemyda (Gray 1834)over Batagur (Gray 1855).
However, some taxonomists who should know better continue to use Bataguridae.
