Bates County is a county located in the U.S. state of Missouri.
The county was organized in 1833 and named after Frederick Bates, the second governor of Missouri.
In the county the population was spread out with 26.50% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 26.00% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 17.40% who were 65 years of age or older.

 Frederick Bates - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Born in 1777 in Belmont, Virginia, Bates started his career as a low level government official in Detroit, Michigan, then received a significant promotion when the Aaron Burr conspiracy was uncovered.
In 1824, Bates became the second governor of Missouri, and died in office in August 1825, in Chesterfield, Missouri, due to a short illness thought to be pneumonia.
Bates was buried at the family cemetery on the Thornhill estate near St.

September 25, the county court was requested to order a special election on the propositions of subscribing $100,000 to the main line of the Tebo & Neosho, $100,000 to the Butler branch of the same, and $100,000 to the Lexington, Holden & Butler roads.
A special term of the county court was held on June 25,1870, to consider the propriety of subscribing $50,000 to the Tebo & Neosho for the purpose of securing that road through the town of Hudson and Pleasant Gap Township, Bates County.
The Bates County Record in early days devoted considerable attention to the subject and was soon joined by the Bates County Democrat, which has never seemed to tire in the cause.

When Bates County organized and separated from Cass County in 1841, county commissioners selected Harmony Mission as the first county seat, presumably because of the established development and central location.
Fifty-five acres donated to the county induced officials to move the county seat to Butler in 1856.
The legislature recognized Pleasant Gap as the official county seat in 1865, and the sheriff was ordered to prepare a clerk's office and courtroom.

The audit claims the county failed to adequately plan the new detention center by not running forecasts of projected revenues and expenditures or for occupancy rates.
In response to the audit, the sheriff noted that he paid $100 more for the vehicle than the county did and he felt the sale was proper and beneficial to the county because they made a profit.
The county commissioners said that since the raises were given in good faith and in accordance with state law at the time they would act if a court issued a ruling on the matter.

Upon this decision Bates County remained as originally constituted until February, 1855, when the present county of Vernon was legally created (February 27), the three southern tiers of townships in Cass County having previously been added to Bates County, (February 27), these two provisions giving to the latter its present dimensions.
Thomas B. Arnet, of the county of Van Buren; Robert M. White, of Johnson County, and Cornelius Davy of Jackson County, are hereby appointed commissioners to select the permanent seat of justice for said county.
The act creating the new county of Vernon was soon declared unconstitutional, which left the county of Bates as originally erected until 1855, when, as stated, the southern part of Cass was added to it.

The topography of Pleasant Gap township is broken, mostly what is called locally, high prairie; but it is good agricultural land.
His brother who came at the same time, and at one time was county surveyor, left for California in 1852.
The first postoffice in the east part of the county was established in 1840, near where Pleasant Gap village now is and an old man named Anderson Cockrell was the first postmaster.
