America's worst school violence ever was not a recent event, but the Bath School disaster of 1927.
Andrew Kehoe, a school board member upset with his tax bill, used dynamite and some pyrotol from WWI-era military surplus to blow himself up along with the elementary school of Bath Township, Michigan, leaving 45 dead and 58 injured.
See a 1927 book on the disaster, a list of victims, the coroner's inquest, a historical marker, a memorial park, an oral history from a witness, and a 1920s KKK rant denouncing Kehoe as an agent of the Roman Catholic conspiracy.

Kehoe variously served as school board trustee, treasurer, and filled in the remainder of a term as township clerk, although he lost the election to keep the position at the next election.
After the Oklahoma City bombing occured, the major networks did segments on Bath, and the after effects, in fact even though I knew of the Bath School Disaster, I didn't know that it had been the largest single event mass murder until I saw it on the national news.
I was born and raised in Bath and for the past 14 years I have been researching this event.

On May 18, 1927, a dynamite blast rocked the Bath Consolidated School, shattering one wing of the building and resulting in the death of thirty-nine children and teachers; dozens more were injured.
Resentful of higher taxes imposed for the school construction and the impending foreclosure on his farm, he took revenge on Bath's citizens by targeting their children.
On August 18, 1928, Bath looked to the future and dedicated the James Couzens Agricultural School to its "living youth." A statue entitled, Girl with a Cat, sculpted by University of Michigan artist Carleton W. Angell and purchased with pennies donated by the children of Michigan was also dedicated that day.

Luckily, the state came to the rescue with disaster relief and the school was rebuilt.

For his Eagle project, Steven tore down a structure at Heartwood school at Ingham Intermediate School District and rebuilt it so that there was more shade for the students at Heartwood.
Drew built a pavilion for his Eagle Project at the Bath Township Soccer Complex for barbeques or to use as a shelter.
He is currently a junior at Bath High School and plans to go to college at a major university.

It is scary enough going to school with all the peer presure, but also having to worry about being killed by a fellow student shouldn't be something that a student should have to think about.
When I went to school, we didn't get metal detectors until I was in senior year and we were one of the firt ones to get them.

On a warm Spring morning in May of 1927 the Treasurer of the Bath, Michigan Consolidated School District blew up half of the school building (intending to have destroyed all of it).
Within the hour he had committed suicide (and more murders) in the middle of the village by detonating explosives in his vehicle.
In all, 45 people would be dead and many more would be injured in the worst instance of school violence in U.S. history.

Mergener officiating and burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetary, Bath.
After his death, Ethel moved back to Bath with her family.They had 3 children- 2 boys and a girl- 2 children (1 boy and 1 girl) were killed in school explosion in the late twenties.
and great grandson of Philip and Sarah was injured in the Bath School explosion when 44 people were murdered in 1927, mostly children.
