Bathory - The Quorthon Nordland interview Part I
Quorthon: An overwhelming majority of BATHORY's fans consider the pure BATHORY and, according to their dedication and the tone of their letters, one that no other act seem to be able to deliver with quite such a feel and so genuinely.
Quorthon: The BATHORY that did the albums "Bathory", "The Return" and "Under the Sign", was a very different bag of attitude, experience and vision, than the BATHORY that did the "Blood Fire Death", "Hammerheart" and "Twilight of the Gods" albums.
BATHORY was pinned down in a corner with this sticker that said: "Swedish act with heavy atmospheric metal sporting apparent Wagnerian influences and Nordic themes".

Let's face it, any group that's released three albums and hasn't yet told anyone exactly who is in the band likes to play their rock and roll cards close to their chest.
The Bathory tracks - especially The return of the darkness and evil (this interviewer made some titles spelling mistakes-EM) - made an immediate impression on European thrash followers, and the compilation's owner agreed to finance the group's first LP, simply titled Bathory.

Music is being infused once again with physicality, expressiveness and affect, while European theoretical music continues to spin ever further into its own obscure orbit, where it will eventuall meet the previous, forgotten generation of American concert music.
Banana music accusations aside, the heartbeat and expression are returning to music here, music which left the rest of the world with 75 years of theoretical experimentation and raw nerves.

Identifiable throughout are the similarities in structural experimentation, instrumental experimentation (tone and timbre), and the incorporation of musics heretofore alien to the fields of rock.

New Age - The resurgence of electronic music in the 80s was partly due to its inclusion in the vastly expansionist, catch-all genre of new age (or, later, contemporary instrumental), not to mention the retroactive classification of 70s music under the same moniker.

Music composed merely of competence, conviction and passion--but with no edge--can be unbearably dull: Schubert, Delius, Bruckner, Handel.
My music does sound excellent and imaginative to me in my head as I compose, complete and full and rich and dramatic and all those things which I want music to be.
And the music, in stereophonic sound, blooming all around me, was intolerable; the film images faded quickly but the aural images remained true for weeks.

Whereas their first two, technically challenged efforts had benefited from all the class and precision of a plane crash, this album's clearer, more professional sound finally allowed Seth Quorthon's fast-maturing songwriting skills to shine through the murk.
This did not, however, mean that Bathory was forgetting their roots.
In short, though clearly transitional (which of their albums wasn't?), Under the Sign: The Sign of the Black Mark remains a career highlight for Bathory and a crucial LP for all lovers of extreme metal.

Holden's Catch is a Chicago based quartet whose musical leanings fall somewhere in the Avail/ Hot Water Music/ Samiam category, where the music is a distinct blend of subtle yet furious punk rock and the band's chops have just in much in common with Husker Du as they do Social Distortion.
And lest we forget the Godflesh meets Bathory musical stance the band takes, a style that may sound a tad disjointed at first, yet really accetuates the bleak, cold feelings the band embodies.

His music — hundreds of individual pieces for every instrument or musical group imaginable — is frequently used today in television shows and advertisements, thus always remaining in the forefront of the minds of people who otherwise wouldn't listen to classical music.

Both tech and tune are fruits of the 20th Century come to maturity in the 21st: Gerber's Symphony reveals an eclectic strength of purpose, the merging of serialism's tone rows with a love of textures, woven with hints of world music and a romanticism come home from long exile.

 REVIEW: Hexenhaus - "Dreamlands"
They call it "modern music for modern vampires." Hexenhaus, a ritualistic and eclectic musical group out of Texas, has shrugged off the guitar-laden sound of oldsters like Bauhaus or Sisters and instead replaced them with strings and orchestratic accompaniments.
Conceived originally as a musical play based on the famed legend of Elizabeth Bathory, Transylvania's estranged Countess of Blood who would bathe in the fresh blood of young virgins to keep her beauty, they tinged their work as well with references and relations to writer H.P. Lovecraft.
The music may get a little repetitive considering the source of the sounds being so limited, but I assume that Hexenhaus would be so much better on a stage.
