Bathurst Correctional Centre Facilities - 14/10/1998 - QWN
The projects comprise a periodic detention centre, a crisis management unit and visitors centre and an indigenous design workshop, the first of its kind to be constructed within a correctional centre.
Prior to the construction of the centre it was necessary to transport those short-term detainees out of the region, separating them from their families and dislocating them from their communities.
The design workshop, known as the Girrawaa creative works centre, is constructed in the shape of a lace monitor goanna and marks an interesting contrast with the less imaginative structures that comprise the rest of the correctional centre.

That Corrective Services effect the placement and transfer of Aboriginal prisoners according to the principle that, where possible, an Aboriginal prisoner should be placed in an institution as close as possible to the place of residence of his or her family.
That where it is found to be impossible to place a prisoner in the prison nearest to his or her family sympathetic consideration should be given to providing financial assistance to the family, to visit the prisoner from time to time.
Corrective service authorities should negotiate with such groups for the provision of educational and cultural services to Aboriginal prisoners and favourably consider the formal recognition of such bodies as capable of representing the interests and viewpoints of Aboriginal prisoners.

It appears that the Gaol at Bathurst was established on or by 1 January, 1830 (1)
Mr William Cummings (the Member for East Macquarie) moved in the Legislative Assembly on 21 August, 1866 that the Bathurst Gaol be relocated "its sanitary condition evidently being injurious to the health and the lives of the residents of Bathurst" however, the motion was lost.
Bathurst (occasionally called the Central Western Prison) was a major gaol reserved for prisoners variously described as 'the more hopeful class' (9) 'the less incorrigible' (10) or 'men previously convicted but deemed amenable to reformative influences' (11) Bathurst Prison continued to house prisoners serving their second or subsequent sentence.

When you talk to library practice students and mention libraries in correctional centres, they say they would not like to work in a place where your users are murderers, rapist and thieves.
The phone had to be used where the correctional centre was either too far away, eg Broken Hill, Glen Innes or the where the security is the strictest and casual visitors are not encouraged, eg Special Purpose Centre.
There is one thing from my research that I can confidently say that every correctional centre in NSW has a library and some have more than one, eg Goulburn Correctional Centre currently has three (maximum security, minimum security and a special unit) and will have a fourth library when the new section opens.
