Football has been played in the islands since 1930, when the first ball was an old leather football case stuffed with rags.
In front of the church the tempting waters of Apsley Strait, separating Bathurst Island from Melville Island (Australia's second-largest island, after Tasmania), are off limits due to the crocodiles and stingers.

In 1644 Abel Tasman became the first European to officially sight the island although he incorrectly assumed that it was part of the northern coast of Australia.
It has long been thought that the wild buffalo which exist on the island were feral versions of buffalo brought by the Fort Dundas settlers.

The Australian and Northern Territory Governments have announced funding for a new health clinic for the Tiwi people on Bathurst Island in the Northern Territory.
The Northern Territory Health Minister, Peter Toyne, said Territory Health has worked with the Tiwi Island Community Consultation Group on the design and would undertake project management of the clinic redevelopment and meet the ongoing repairs and maintenance costs.
The Northern Territory Government will contribute $350 000 to the clinic and pay for ongoing costs estimated to be $800 000 a year.

Born in the French province of Alsace in 1872, Gsell trained for the priesthood in France and Italy and was ordained in 1896.
He gained government approval for the establishment of a mission on Bathurst Island in 1911, and lived on the island as head of the mission from that time until 1938.
Attempts to introduce Christianity to the Aboriginal residents of the island were only moderately successful, but Gsell did influence a modification to the local culture by intervening in the practice of young teenage girls being sold into marriages with the old men of the community.

Bathurst Island: the Tiwi Islands, NT Bathurst Island Catholic Mission was established in 1911.
The French Father Gsell, objecting to the marriage practices of the local Tiwi people whereby young girls were married to older men, took as many as 150 of them as "wives", where they were taught domestic skills by nuns in the convent.
The island has a beautiful coastline, with wide beaches where large sea turtles lay their eggs, ammonite fossils embedded in the sandstone rocks at Mukanuwu, weird rock formations like Rocky Point, and a wonderful waterfall and pool at Tumwarripi.

Another version claimed she called at the island of Baba where the crew made fun of one of the native girls, and were subsequently murdered by the natives, then the brig was run ashore and burned.
