Bathyscape   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
A bathyscape or bathyscaphe is a self-propelled deep-sea diving submersible, consisting of a crew cabin similar to a bathysphere suspended below a float filled with a buoyant liquid such as petrol.
The first bathyscape was FNRS-2, built in Belgium by Auguste Piccard.
Piccard's second Bathyscape was Trieste, and was purchased by the US Navy in 1957.

 Tomb of Valdemar
Instead they find a bathyscape which has been lowered into the tomb on a chain, and encounter the terrified novelist Miranda Pelham, whose associate and lover Erik has opened the tomb, transformed into a monstrous mutant and killed their pilot, Prahda.
The monster clings to the outside of the bathyscape and is instantly killed when it emerges back into the sulphuric acid atmosphere of Ashkellia, but the bathyscape continues upwards, back to the floating golden palace of the Old Ones.
Miranda is taken for questioning by the brutal Kampp, while the Doctor and Romana are brought before a quite literal party of adolescents, the sons and daughters of the former galactic Elite.

We enter the bathyscape and descend to screaming pressures watching those shapes and lights drift by, looking almost like Rorschach test blots come to life.
Yet OP becomes our bathyscape, our safe container, for entering that world of the deep ocean of our minds, a sometimes frightening shadowless world of drifting dark shapes, the mysterious lights, the unknown, the misunderstood.
In our bathyscape we scour this debris, trying to pick through and cannibalise what we can in the hope of building more meaning and purpose into our lives.

The dive was made in the bathyscape Trieste built by Auguste Piccard, his son Swiss explorer Jean Ernest-Jean Piccard and US Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh.
In the years following, the bathyscape was used for a number of oceanographic research projects, including biological observation, and in 1957 she was chartered and later purchased by the US Navy.
The bathyscape was retired following the US Navy's commission of the Trieste II, and is currently on exhibit at the Washington Naval Historical Center.

Comics Should Be Good: CSBG Roundtable: All-Star Superman #1
Unfortunately this is the high spot of the comic as things begin to go downhill from here and we find Superman flying across the face of the Sun to rescue a kind of bathyscape which seems to be suffering from engine failure even before one of the occupants starts mutating into a human bomb.
We are told that the temperature is 6000 degrees fahrenheit, and yet nobody on board the bathyscape appears to suffer any ill effect from Superman opening the door to haul out bomb boy.
We then get a very confusing scene break where we go from not yet introduced chum Doc Quintum speaking in the Bathyscape near the Sun, to Doc Quintum speaking in an entirely different spherically shaped object on a barren landscape that might be the Moon but isn't.

According to the publisher’s jacket description, “if it happened beneath the sea’s surface, it is in this book.” If we except purely oceanographic or biological exploration the claim is probably well-founded.
The sixteen chapters trace the development of every kind of device that has taken man under the sea or helped him escape from it, from diving bells, helmet suits, submarine escape lungs and bathyspheres down to the modern aqualung and bathyscape.
Jacques Cousteau has described his aqualung as “primitive and unworthy of contemporary levels of science.” Georges Houot and Pierre-Henri Willm who hold the present depth record say that their bathyscape is “only a prototype, a blind, clumsy, limping monster.” As Mr.

 Bathyscaphe Summary
1: navigable deep diving vessel for underwater exploration [syn: bathyscaph, bathyscape]
Since the early 1700s when Edmund Halley invented the first diving bell, oceanographers and engineers had been putting forth a series of efforts to overcome the obstacles associated with deep sea exploration.
Despite this, manned deep sea expeditions will continue as long as direct participation is required.
