French Third Republic - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
It was a republican parliamentary democracy that was created on September 4, 1870 following the collapse of the Empire of Napoleon III in the Franco-Prussian War.
After Napoleon's capture by the Prussians at Sedan, General Louis Jules Trochu and the politician Léon Gambetta overthrew the Second Empire and established the "Government of National Defence" which later became the conservative Third Republic.
Its creation was overshadowed by the settlement of peace terms with Prussia and the subsequent revolution in Paris known as the Paris Commune, which maintained a radical regime for two months until its bloody suppression in May 1871.

The Nationalism Project: Review of The Nation as a Local Metaphor
The first is the local commemoration of Sedan Day, a nation-wide but "unofficial" holiday celebrating victory at the Battle of Sedan in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War.
Sedan Day soon became a focus for local political struggle; Württemberg had been opposed to Prussian-led German Unification, and the holiday became a debate between local Prussophile, Protestant Liberal bourgeoisie and Catholics and upholders of local political rights.
Although not a fl and white conflict (the Liberals incorporate their own, local meanings into Sedan Day) the holiday failed to reconcile the local and the national in the eyes of many Württembergers; and ultimately, the holiday faltered and diminished.

The reputation of the French army of 1870 was based on a legend that it could no longer live up to, and this army marched to Sedan, "like a herd of cattle lashed by the whip of fate."
While the French military was given the physical tools for modern war - the chassepot rifle and the mitrailleuse - the upper leadership did not possess the intellectual or emotional stamina for modern warfare.
Finally, while Zola waffles on whether or not war is a "necessary evil," he certainly makes the point that given its inherently high cost in human suffering that it should only be embarked upon for reasons of national survival, and not merely to satisfy the whims of an opportunistic politician.
