Batley is a small town in Kirklees Metropolitan Borough, in the county of West Yorkshire, England.
The present Batley Parish Church was built in the reign of Henry VI (1422-1461), and parts of the original remain.
Batley Grammar School was attended by Sir Titus Salt, an industrialist who founded the model village of Saltaire, and by Joseph Priestley, a friend of Benjamin Franklin, Josiah Wedgwood.

Batley and Spen came into being in the boundary review of 1983.
Batley and Spen has been held since its creation by the Conservatives' Elizabeth Peacock, but even in the landslide years of 1983 and 1987 the majorities were small.
This seat could therefore be viewed as a naturally Labour inclined marginal; it would in all probability be lost to the Tories in a general election in which the two main parties have approximately the same share of the vote nationally.

Batley and Spen, like several other small-town 'Pennine Belt' seats, has proved an extremely tough nut for Labour to crack.
Conservative MP Elizabeth Peacock held on by just 1,362 votes in 1987, then actually increased her majority (despite a national swing to Labour) in 1992, before finally being defeated in 1997 on a swing of 7.4%, again significantly lower than the national average.
The constituency includes the town of Batley itself, which has a substantial Asian population, together with the smaller towns of Cleckheaton and Birstall, just south of the M62 motorway.
