The Batlokoas who originally were settled near Warden and Vrede became "displaced" after being attacked by the Zulus during the Difaquane or wars of retribution in the early 1820's.
Many Batlokoas (and their slaves from the conquered tribes) died on the return trip to the Free State, as a result of their scorched earth policy on the outward journey.
The failure of the Basutos to conquer the Batlokoas was attributed to the " strong medicine" of the then incumbent missionary at Imperani, Rev.John Daniel, father of the first Mrs Newberry of Prynnsberg.

Thus, in time, Lelingoana's area became identified as Tlokoeng (literally: 'where the Batlokoa are') in reference to the fact that it was controlled by Sekonyela agnates as well as being populated by people whose heritage lay with the Batlokoa chiefdom of old.
The different origins and heritage of the Batlokoa in relation to other Basotho, for example, were reflected in different bridewealth payment practices, and in the association of particular clan identities with particular villages (Ashton 1952: 17).
However, though the Batlokoa heritage was revived as a construct of identity and has been formally sanctioned in official descriptions of the chieftainship up to the present day, it was not a principal means by which Lelingoana and his heir, Mosuoe, achieved a distinct and relatively senior status in the chieftainship.

She became the wife of Mokotjo, the chief of the neighboring Batlokoa.
Unfortunately, this meant the end of the Batlokoa tribe as such and their crushing defeat will simultaneously rid Moshoeshoe of their presence and clear the field for further penetration by their common foe, the insatiable land-devouring Boer.
