Batman himself is saved from destruction by Superman, who arrives on the scene just in time to fly into the pit and grab him before it's too late.

I love Batmans 1,2 and 3 and, even if the film stinks, it may be interesting to listen to Schumacher try to explain his actions on his audio commentary for 4.
