Batman (1943), 15 awful episodes (he wears fl long-underwear, grey swim trunks, a viking helmet, and drives a Model-T batmobile) were nevertheless well-received as Plan 9 From Outer Space type camp when an edited feature-length version was re-released in 1965.
In the movie, Penguin kidnaps the world's leaders from the U.N. Building in his submarine and uses a device to remove all moisture from their bodies, reducing each to a pile of dry chemicals (an idea later used in a Star Trek episode).

He may be clean-cut and without the demons of the 90s Batman but West proved capable on the series of tackling either high camp moments of dancing in discos, giggling manically to laughing gas or contemplating the villains plots with all the dramatic seriousness of watching Hiroshima being bombed.

Okay this movie is very different form the Batman movies that younger audiences may be familiar with but it's still a very good movie altogether.
Batman, starring Adam West and Burt Ward, was a TV series which ran for like 3 years, twice a week, from 1966 to 1968.
The movie is slow at times, the acting IS over the top (most all TV acting was over the top in the 60s and 70s), the plot silly.

The self-referential and lightly mocking tone was a hit with parents, while kids of all ages delighted to the escapades of the Dynamic Duo and a bevy of belligerent baddies.
As is often the case in super-hero movies, the villains often get a lot more to do than the heroes...which makes sense because without super-villains to battle with, these two superheroes devolve into...two grown men wearing tights and living together in a cave.
The difference between this Batman and the modern ones...is that this one is laughable on purpose.

The movie had things from the papers at the time like Vietnam (not actually but close), love between Bruce and Kitka/Catwoman which was from Bruce as a bachelor, to a movie that had seriousness than just slap stick comedy.
The brilliance of 'Batman' was that it played as comedy to adults (who likely HAD read Batman- or knew the character- as children) and deadly serious adventure to kids.
Inside of that universe Batman is respected by authorites, feared by criminals, and held in awe by the public.

Bale is the best Batman we've had yet, but someone behind the camera is really having him overdo the thing of always speaking in a low whispery husky voice, which is very much in fashion now in Hollywood for how to play a dangerous hero.
One area where I have to give the movie a little credit is their attempt to anchor some of the stranger comic book conventions in reality.

This movie is more of the same, though it has a slightly harder edge (by my unscientific count at least five henchmen die in the course of this movie) and larger budget.
The scenes of the Batboat, Batcopter, Batcycle et al built for the movie would be thriftily recycled through the TV show for several years.
But even when I hated the series, I had to agree the movie was a lot of fun; and if nothing else, it speaks reams about the Batman character - that it not only survived this sort of treatment, but has continued to flourish.

Yeah, tell that to Tim Burton...all of his Batman movies were bombs.
What I love about this movie and the old 60s TV series is that it is intentionally designed to be a fun ride for Saturday morning television.
I used to draw pictures of Batman, I even wrote a story when I was a kid based on this very movie.
