Batman Returns (1992)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Batman Returns allowed us a better look at Batman/Bruce Wayne himself, who was little more than an imposing supporting cast member in the first film; I loved Jack Nicholson's over-the-top performance, but THIS fanboy wanted more of the Caped Crusader in the film.
Batman Returns gave us that and more...we got Batman/Bruce character development, the AWESOME give-and-take between Batman and Catwoman (one of the strangest courtships in comics), and Burton even tossed us a little bit of fun, dark humor with Shreck and the Penguin.
Batman Returns excelled in that it was a dark, disturbingly insane portrait of Batman and Gotham City; a film that carefully balances on the fine line where and darkness and madness meet.

 Batman Returns - Rotten Tomatoes
In director Tim Burton's sequel to his successful BATMAN (1989), the Caped Crusador (Michael Keaton) is pitted against the demented, ravenous Penguin (Danny DeVito), a pitiful, orphaned psychopathic freak who once went on a baby-killing spree, and a "power" hungry capitalist villain Max Shreck (Christopher Walken).
Of all the Batman pictures, this is the most striking, atmospheric and effective.
This is less of a sequel than reworking of the first film's themes, with greater attention paid to the villains (all colorful and more intriguing than the hero) and more visually inventive set pieces, albeit contained in a less coherent work.

Batman Returns is arguably the "deepest" movie of the first four and the closest to Burton's twisted visions.
Batman Returns wasn't quite as big a film as its predeccesor and neither is its DVD, largely because most of the origin material, how Burton and Keaton became involved, is covered on the first release of the Anthology.

 Batman Returns: Special Edition (1992)
The existence of 1997’s Batman and Robin meant that it wouldn’t be seen as the worst of the four, but most fans seem to prefer 1989’s Batman and 1995’s Batman Forever.
Keaton played the distractedness of Wayne and the intensity of Batman with far greater depth and deftness in the sequel; he appeared much less strained and he was able to make Batman seem better integrated in the film than on the first occasion.

Danny DeVito probably garnered the most criticisms for his scary, abrasive performance as The Penguin, but it is worth noting that perhaps the script and Burton tended to place too the emphasis on the character, burdening him with having to carry more of the picture than is necessary.

In some ways better than Danny Elfman's score for the first Batman film (and vice versa), Batman Returns is one of the composers very finest, and most entertaining, scores.
While the score for the first film was more action oriented, this score is slower and more emotional (It has its fair share of action, too, of course), although they both share the same dark and dramatic mood and sound.
Batman Returns is also much more thematically interesting.
