Mining.—The mineral districts occur from Cape Breton to the islands in the Pacific and the Yukon district.
The chief fruit-growing districts have long been in southern and western Ontario and in Nova Scotia; but recently much attention has been devoted to fruit-growing in British Columbia, where large areas of suitable land are available for the cultivation of apples, pears and other fruits.

In the electoral district of Lorne, a meeting of the south branch Métis was held in the village of Batoche on March 24, and thirty representatives voted to ask Riel to return and represent their cause.
A provisional government was declared at Batoche on March 19, with Riel as the political and sprititual leader and with Dumont assuming responsiblity for military affairs.
The outcome of the ensuing Battle of Batoche which took place from May 9 – May 12 was never in doubt, and on May 15 a disheveled Riel surrendered to Canadian forces.

Following the Red River Rebellion, large numbers of Métis travelled west and settled in the Saskatchewan Valley, especially along the south branch of the river in the country surrounding the Saint-Laurent mission (near modern Grandin, Saskatchewan).
On May 6 a joint "Settler's Union" meeting was attended by both the Métis and English-speaking representatives from Prince Albert, including William Henry Jackson, an Ontario settler sympathetic to the Métis and known to them as Honoré Jackson, and James Isbister of the Anglo-Metis.

The Bell of Batoche, brought by Ed McCurry and Ira Nattress, was deposited in Millbrook, in the heart of the Orange belt, and put on display as one of the semi-sanctified spoils of war.
Finally, I believe that to hear the Bell of Batoche ringing again in the Metis heartland from its rightful home in the church would be the truly moving culmination of a significant chapter in our nation's history.

This year the District of Alberta is named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria, who is married to the Marquees of Lorne- Canada's Governor General, from 1878 to 1883.

After the battle was lost, the Ontario troops stormed the church of St Antoine de Padoue at Batoche, stealing the the bell from the steeple as a war trophy.

The 1885 Resistance occurred because the Métis were frustrated that the federal government did not address their many petitions regarding their lack of formal title to their lands and their desire for proper political representation.
In 1881, the electoral District of Lorne – which included Prince Albert, Carlton, Duck Lake, St. Laurent and Batoche – was created.
The Métis in the Saskatchewan District (and in the Assiniboia District in what is now southern Saskatchewan and southeastern Alberta) did not have formal title to their lands.

August 21 he says: "Proceed to have various articles of goods taken to house, viz., stove, bed and dishes, all of which were carefully selected at stores," and the next day: "No more boarding please." In the future he would have a little more control over the porridge.

 MHS Transactions: The life and times of Archbishop Tache
In 1844, this vast district became an apostolic vicariate and Bishop Provencher brought to the Red River region the first four Grey Nuns, Sisters, Valade, Lagrave, Coutlee and Lafrance.
Upon the invitation of the Lieutenant-Governor, Bishop Tache, who knew the territory so well, was requested to devise a plan of sub-division in electoral districts for the new government.
It is reported that the Archbishop reconstituted, from memory and from documents on hand, the estate of the deceased Bishop, a feat which only Tache could perform "proving to be a significant service to the Church and the missions of the North".
