The family Batrachoididae, with its sixty-nine species, is the lone family of the order Batrachoidiformes.
Most batrachoidids are drab brown with various blotches and have lightly colored ventral surfaces (4).
Batrachoididae- three pairs of gills; gill membrane broadly joined to isthmus; six branchiostegal rays; no pyloric caeca, ribs, epiotics, or intercalars; peculiar intervertebrallike basal articulation of upper hypurals with rest of caudal skeleton; jugular pelvic fins (3).

It can reach an adult length of 15 inches, but it's rare to find a specimen larger than 12 inches.
The Bay's only toadfish species belongs to the family Batrachoididae, which comprises 69 other, similar species, whose ranges extend in the western Atlantic from Maine to the West Indies.
The unlovely toadfish has large, protruding eyes; a broad mouth and fleshy areas (including flesh-like 'whiskers') surrounding the jaws; a short snout and scaleless, slimy skin; a rounded caudal fin and separate dorsal fins enveloping three short spines; yellowish brown skin with oblique brown bars extending on to the fins.
