Amphibians of the Kern River Valley
Batrachoseps relictus (Relictual slender salamander) - Although originally described from several seepage areas in the lower Kern River Canyon, it has not been found there since the early 1970s and may well be extirpated from that area.
Batrachoseps "Breckenridge" (Breckenridge Mountain slender salamander) - This is an undescribed species known only from a single seepage on the southeastern flank of Breckenridge Mountain at 6300 ft. First collected in 1979, the site was severely damaged by the re-routing of a logging road through the seep area.
Batrachoseps - Although Pleistocene climate shifts had considerable effects on the distribution of many plants and animals in the American southwest, their role in explaining slender salamander distribution is probably minor.

Four species of Batrachoseps (B. aridus, B. stebbinsi, B. pacificus, and B. simatus) may be fragmentations of a once widespread species (01).

Batrachoseps relictus - Relictual Slender Salamander
Most Batrachoseps are active on rainy or wet nights when temperatures are moderate, fall through spring, retreating underground when the soil dries or when air temperature drops to near freezing.
Batrachoseps species, when disturbed, may coil up and remain still, then uncoil quickly and spring away, repeatedly bouncing over the ground.
The old type locality was at 730 m and other animals were found from as low as 500 m in the Kern Canyon in rocky areas with scanty tree cover consisting mostly of oaks with scattered pines and buckeyes and sycamores in creek bottoms.

An additional Batrachoseps species is currently being described from the southern Sierra Nevada; several others from the southern Sierra have been identified but not described (Hansen pers.
If San Gabriel Mountain slender salamander conforms to patterns exhibited by Tehachapi slender salamander (Batrachoseps stebbinsi), which resembles it and is also a talus dweller (Wake 1996), it forages in leaf litter and under bark and rotten logs for food.

No luck so far, but then again these the Batrachoseps of this district might prefer different habitat, so I work my way up and down a few of the slick, muddy creek banks, rooting through the loose vegetation and pulling up the corners of thick green blankets of moss.
The ground under the giant redwood and cedar trees is piled high and far with pieces of wood, bark, and logs, including several daunting obstacle courses of enormous tree trunks.

Taxonomy and Relationships: The genus Batrachoseps is made of many cryptic species (species that are virtually impossible to tell apart anatomically).
Much of the taxonomy has been based on analysis of skin proteins.

Checklist of Amphibian Species and Identification Guide
These three species of Slender Salamanders, genus Batrachoseps, are included in this account since the three were, until recently regarded as one species (Batrachoseps pacificus).
Also, the Desert Slender Salamander has been considered a separate species (Batrachoseps aridus), but is regarded by some today to be a subspecies of the Garden Slender Salamander.
The 14 species of Batrachoseps are difficult to distinguish and one should rely heavily on geographic location to narrow down the possibilities - some new species have been identified by differences in their DNA, something of little use in the field!

However I do believe now that I will not make any contacts using this NG.
My scientific contacts are too busy with their own projects (whick doesnot include so "insignificant" genera like Batrachoseps) and their students are not that keen to help unless they see a "next day" benefit.
I presume I'll shelve the project again for the next 9 years!!
