Each batsman is standing at either end of a rec- tangular area in the middle of the cricket ground, kind of long and thin like a bowling alley (not *that* long and thin).
Well, cricket has a way around this, it's called "declaring." At any time the captain of the team that is batting may "declare" that their innings are over, even though maybe they are only in the middle of the batting order.
The ground in a cricket pitch should be smooth but of course ground isn't perfect, and combined with the spin the bowler puts on the ball and the fact that it's lumpy, it's an intriguing proposition for a batsman.
