Batsugun - GameInnovation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Batsugun is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up developed and published by Japanese game developer Toaplan, who have since gone out of business.
Batsugun was the first "Manic Shooter," or "Bullet-Hell" shooter, a genre which now includes games such as Mars Matrix and DoDonPachi.
As opposed to previous shooters which involved many enemies and fast-moving bullets, Batsugun involves relatively few enemies firing massive ammounts of bullets that are often slow-moving and have to be navigated through.

 batsugun
For example, Batsugun features a stubby looking ship that can power up in three ways; there is the crescent shot which covers a good amount of space with each shot and does moderate damage to enemy armor.
The original Batsugun came out in the arcades in 1993 so you will excuse Toaplan if their graphics are not up to speed with today's rendered, glistening, prettier than thou game art.
I enjoyed Batsugun when it first came out in the arcades and the Saturn version is a direct port of the arcade version so it plays like I remember it.

Batsugun is a vertically scrolling "shooting 'em up" hailing from the now deceased Japanese game developer Toaplan.
Heralded by some as the first manic shooter, Batsugun involved employees who would go on to form and work at Cave.
The company was formed primarily from the remains of Toaplan, and several of their early games are considered to be spirtual successors to prior Toaplan works, in particular Batsugun.

 MAWS - showing resource: batsugun
Heralded by some as the first 'maniac shooter', Batsugun involved employees who would go on to form and work at Cave and continue to work in this subgenre.
Batsugun saw an evolution in the use of complex bullet and enemy patterns and player fire power and hit-box.
The scoring trick on the fourth boss (destroy the two giant laser cannons, let the tanks appearing from the hangars fill the ramps and become red, bomb for 59,630 points a tank) was one source of inspiration for "Battle Garegga"'s gameplay.

The graphics were perfectly replicated, and maybe I am getting a LITTLE tired of the old school look of shooters and I would like to move on to more impressive 2D gfx like in SG, but it's nothing horrid.
Batsugun added a new kind of element to shooters with the level up meter.
In the beginning I had no problems, actually until level 6 it was pretty easy (It goes 1-5 for round 1, 2-5 for round 2, 3-5 r3, and 4-5 r4 and each round is harder than the last).

Flying Shark - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Piloting a bi-plane, the player needs to take out land based targets such as tanks and turrets and shoot enemy airplanes in order to collect special pickups to increase the plane's firepower.
According to the story of Batsugun, the pilot of the bi-plane was called Rom Schneider.
Flying Shark was converted to the Amiga, Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, and Nintendo Entertainment System.

I say this as Batsugun and Donpachi are the 2 remaining shooters that I feel I need to get for the system.
Batsugun is much more traditional but still enjoyable if a bit too easy at first.
Batsugun on the other hand isa gem of a shooter, with a charming music score.

"Batsugun and the Don Pachi series: bees of a feather."
A good case can be made for this game having inspired Cave's famous Don Pachi series, as it's somewhat manic, with big huge boss sprites, the bee thing, and plus it came out before Don Pachi.
It's a good solid game, too, and holds up well on multiple replays. The weapons when powered up are very satisfying, covering the screen in electric death, and the large bosses have multiple patterns and forms, yet you rarely feel like the game has cheated you; it's just tough.

I figured that this is the spiritual predecessor to the Pachi series, so I might be able to just get right into it.
Iceman is like a prototype for the "Type C" in the Pachi games, and so many of the enemy shots follow familiar patterns.

Buy Batsugun (Saturn) - Order Now!
Although it would be hard to call this Toaplan's best shooter (they made so many!), this is my favorite, and it's the start of the manic shooting genre.
The game is hugely influential--the first to have different characters for each ship, while pioneering Cave-style game play (it is no wonder that many members of the team that made Batsugun went on to form Cave).
The ships are pretty fast (unlike Raiden or even Donpachi) and they have an absurd potential for being powered up.

Similarly, if you don't like using smart bombs (the game starts you off with 3 of these) be prepared to execute some zen-like dodging manouvres.
All this said, however, Batsugun is an enjoyable game, perseverance will reward you with satisfyingly large weapons and continued, if protracted, progress through the levels.
It presents a nice challenge for all but the most seasoned Mars Matrix/Donpachi series players.

The first game, as you may know, was basically a doujin homage to early Toaplan titles, with a cover of Flying Shark’s second stage song (“Gallantry”, second stage of the first Raiden).
The first Raiden was extremely influential, especially for the original creators of that style: Batsugun had the type A ships as a blatant homage to the basic “Spread+forward” missile combination, with the character associated to the 2p side being the original Flying Shark pilot (Schneider).
A few homages also appear in Don Pachi, mainly in some bosses’ attacks and the bee system.
