Battersea is an area of London lying on the south bank of the River Thames.
Bridges erected across the Thames encouraged growth; Putney Bridge, a mile (1.6 km) to the west, was built in 1729, and Battersea Bridge in the centre of the north boundary in 1771.
In the period from 1880 onwards, Battersea was known as a centre of radical politics in the United Kingdom.

The co-ordinates of the centre of London (traditionally considered to be the original Charing Cross, near the junction of Trafalgar Square and Whitehall) are approximately [51°30′29″N, 00°07′29″W].
The density of London varies across the city, with high employment density in the city centre, high residential densities in inner London and lower densities in the suburbs.
A number of large parks outside the city centre are also notable, including the remaining Royal Parks of Greenwich Park to the south east, and Bushy Park and Richmond Park to the south west.
