Sergeant Major - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In particular, the Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) (WO1) is the senior WO of a battalion or regiment, equivalent to a Command Sergeant Major in the United States.
Marine Corps Sergeants Major serve as the senior enlisted Marine in the Corps' units of battalion, squadron or higher echelon, to assist the unit's commander and to handle matters of discipline and morale among the enlisted Marines.
The full title of sergeant major fell out of use until the latter part of the 18th century, when it began to be applied to the senior non-commissioned officer of an infantry battalion or cavalry regiment.

Warrant Officer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This rank is held by the Regimental Sergeant Major of the Army (RSM-A).
WO2s holding Sergeant Major or Corporal Major appointments are often referred to as the "Sergeant Major" or the "Corporal Major", but WO1s are only ever referred to using their full appointment or its abbreviation (the "RSM" or the "Garrison Sergeant Major", for instance).
The duties Marine warrant officers typically fulfill are those that would normally call for the authority of a commissioned officer, however, require an additional level of technical proficiency and practical experience that a commissioned officer would not have had the opportunity to achieve.

By the end of 1943 a towed field battery's war establishment strength was 198 including 10 officers and an SP battery's was 186, again with 10 officers.
Medium batteries (4.5/5.5-inch) were bigger, 252 (still 10 officers), because their gun detachments were larger.
The range and arc of fire of different batteries could be a limitation on the number of batteries in a multi-battery engagement, although the use of 'scale', part of the new procedure, compensated for batteries that could not engage.

A brief history of Battery "B" 1st R.I.L.A. In response to President Abraham Lincoln's call, in 1861, for defenders of the country's honor, integrity, and principles of liberty, there gathered together in the several armories of the State militia, young men full of patriotism, ambition and health, and offered their services.
Battery B was formally mustered out of the service of the United States Monday, June 12, 1865, with a record of three years, eleven months' service in the War of the Rebellion.
There was nothing connected with the organization to particularly impress the minds of the people of the State it represented, but those connected with it, and particularly those who were with it from the beginning, have always been proud of their membership.
