BATTICALOA, 17 October 2003 - UNICEF today witnessed the release of 13 children by the LTTE in the eastern district of Batticaloa, Sri Lanka.
Andrea James, Head of UNICEF Batticaloa, who was present at the release said, “These thirteen children can now go back to their families, back to their schools and back to a normal childhood.
We still have 383 unresolved reported cases of recruitment in Batticaloa and UNICEF will continue its advocacy on behalf of these children until they are all home with their families,” James emphasized.

Shan Thavarajah, correspondent and political columnist for the Sunday edition of the Tamil daily ‘Thinakkural’ had to leave Batticaloa after he too was threatened by persons suspected to be working with the Sri Lanka army intelligence unit in the eastern town.
Dharmeratnam who is from Batticaloa was threatened with death in 2000 and 2001 by unidentified armed groups believed to be working clandestinely with the Sri Lankan state and by a Sinhala extremist group.

 The missing boys of Batticaloa
BATTICALOA, also known as the `Land of the Singing Fish', has for long remained important for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
The taking of the Elephant Pass military garrison in April 2000 was a signal contribution to the organisation by the `boys from Batticaloa' led by Karuna a.k.a V. Muralitharan, the LTTE's military commander for Batticaloa and Amparai.
This September, in a rare show of defiance, 22 schoolchildren staged a two-day protest against the LTTE and stayed away from classes demanding the release of three of their friends who had been reportedly abducted by the Tigers.
