Batticaloa (මඩකළපුව in Sinhala, மட்டக்களப்பு in Tamil) was the provincial capital of the eastern province of Sri Lanka.
Batticaloa is on the east coast, 314 Km from Colombo.
Batticaloa is the primary focus of attention of Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, better known as Karuna Amman, a former LTTE commander who broke away from the main organization in 2004 and currently operates his own political and military group, the Tamileela Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal which is strongly opposed to the "Tamil Tiger" LTTE.

According to the Sri Lankan Army, the Jaffna district Superintendent of Police, W. Charles Wijewardene, was abducted and hacked to death by a mob allegedly instigated by the LTTE at Jaffna-KKS road in the Paalaveddi area.
A LTTE symathiser, suspected to be an informer of the outfit, is shot dead in the Valachchenai area of Batticaloa district.
A civilian, identified as Sinnathrai Muratheelan, suspected to be a former police informant, is shot dead by alleged ‘pistol gang’ cadres of the LTTE in the Trincomalee district.

In many villages in the Batticaloa district it has become a routine practice for the civilian population to move from their homes almost every evening and seek shelter in the nearest temple or church, for fear of shelling and mortar firing from army and police camps, and in the mornings go back to their houses.
Besides, every Tamil household in the district has to exhibit a notice in the entrance door of the house indicating the names of the occupants of the house, giving their National Identity Card number, etc. This is not required for Muslims or Sinhalese.

The injured driver was dispatched to Batticaloa hospital at noon the next day, in a vehicle from Batticaloa that had to turn back because the road was closed.
Puvanendran, a postal worker in Batticaloa, was also travelling in that van with his wife, a teacher, and their little child, who were seated in front of Puvanendran.
According to citizen's groups in Batticaloa, arrests are now far fewer, and in town at least the methods of interrogation and treatment of prisoners by the Military Intelligence unit is far more professional and enlightened.

Batticaloa North - Reggie, brother of renegade eastern leader “ Col. Karuna” (left) who is in charge of Vakarai and Verugal areas with his deputy.
The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has fielded eight candidates in the Batticaloa district out of which seven are solidly behind "Col. Karuna." The only exception is Joseph Pararagasingham who has refused to toe the line and is staunchly backing LTTE leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran.
Pararajasingham said TNA candidates for Batticaloa district were summoned by Karuna's men for a meeting at their base in Thennaham.

At least twelve soldiers and four Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres were killed in Batticaloa district on July 14.
Separately, security forces destroyed a hide-out of the militants at Sardhar forest in the Rajouri district on July 14 and recovered a cache of explosives and ammunition including four kg RDX, four Chinese grenades, four time devices, one RPG rocket launcher, six rockets, six boosters and six meters fuse.
In Morang district, business community and other civilians of Indrapur VDC on July 14 closed a local market and disrupted vehicular movement for two hours along the Mahendra highway in protest against the Maoists' excesses.

Kousalyan, political wing leader for the Batticaloa-Amparai district, was travelling towards the eastern Batticaloa district in a van when he was killed in the ambush at 7.45 p.m., eastern police sources said.
The ambush occurred at Welikanda in the Sinhalese-majority Polonnaruwa district, adjoining Batticaloa.

In 1987, the LTTE began appointing members from a particular district as the respective district leaders.
Since the pioneering LTTE men from the East, Ramalingam Paramadeva alias Rajan and Ranjan Kanagaratnam alias Simon, had been killed earlier at Kaluwanchikudy and Kokkilaai respectively, Karuna was now the "son of the eastern soil" next in seniority.
He assumed command of Batticaloa district shortly before the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord of July 29, 1987.

 'More ruthless than Prabhakaran'
On July 28, 2003, Tamilselvan visited Batticaloa and addressed over 5,000 LTTE fighters from the east at a function held at the 'Meenaham' military base to mark the eighth death anniversary of Anparasi, an LTTE woman commander who was killed when the Tigers overran a Sri Lanka army camp at Pondugal Chenai, near Tharavai on July 27 1995.
Inaugurating a memorial for Anparasi, he spoke at length on the vital role played by cadres from the Batticaloa-Amparai district in the war to safeguard the Wanni heartland and in the major offensives against the Sri Lanka army in the north which led to the fall of the  Elephant Pass and other key garrisons.
Others who spoke at the event included Karuna, who was described as the special commander of the LTTE's Southern Front Forces, T Ramesh, described as the special commander for the Batticaloa-Amparai District, and Nilavini, described as the commander of the LTTE's women's unit in the district.

One person died and nearly one hundred people were injured with some being admitted to critical care unit of a hospital as Tamils and Muslims clashed in renewed ethnic rioting which spread to Valachchenai area in the Batticaloa district of the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka.
As the riots, which originally started with LTTE organized Tamils and Muslim youth in Muttur spread further South in the province, rows of shops in Valachchenai were set on fire by rioting arsonists and more than 20 were reported injured and admitted to hospitals from that place alone.
Kathankudi in Batticaloa District was another area where arson was reported.

This report highlights support to villages affected by the tsunami and rehabilitation work that on-going in villages in which livelihood studies are being undertaken in the tsunami affected provinces of Hambantota, Ampara and Batticaloa.
The Second Workshop on Livelihoods Approaches and Analysis enabled each of the three district teams to present their reports of the livelihoods study they had recently piloted in three villages, followed by feedback from the facilitators and other teams.
The purpose of the workshop was to begin to train teams in livelihoods approaches and analysis to build capacity to conduct livelihoods studies in the tsunami-affected districts of Hambantota, Ampara and Batticaloa.
