  Ty Cobb - MSN Encarta
Beginning in 1907 he captured nine consecutive batting titles and he led the AL in hits seven times between 1907 and 1917.
In addition to his career batting average mark, Cobb established many major league and AL records during his 24 years of play.
These included the most career hits (4,191), a record broken by Pete Rose in 1985; career runs (2,245), broken by Rickey Henderson in 2001; and most stolen bases in a season (96 in 1915), a record first eclipsed by Maury Wills, who stole 104 bases in 1962.

Since Lombardi's batting crown in 1942, no AL catcher has finished even second in the race; the last to finish third was California's Brian Downing in 1979, when he hit.326.
Lombardi won the only other two batting titles among catchers, in 1938 at.342 (when he had a robust total of 529 plate appearances) and also in 1942, when the 100-game rule allowed him to win one he wouldn't have today.

In fact, winning a batting title still means more to me than any other title a hitter can achieve.
It comes down to this: “the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill.” One cannot win a batting title without taking care to try to hit as well as possible every at-bat.
Yet, when you look at the players who have won batting titles in the era of huge salaries, playing as well as possible for its own sake is the common trait that distinguishes them.
