Santa Maria del Fiore and the Battistero of San Giovanni
Florence's cathedral is the fourth of Christianity's principal churches.
The Baptistery of San Giovanni (St. John), located close to the basilica, was long considered to have originally been a pagan temple but it was actually built between the 11th and 13th century over an existing Roman building.
The Baptistery of San Giovanni is famous of its three gilded bronze doors: the South Door (by Andrea Pisano) the North Door (by Lorenzo Ghiberti) and the East Door (again by Ghiberti).

Florence's Battistero di San Giovanni was built in the VII century, probably following the conversion of Queen Teodolinda to Christianity.
The building, which is octagonal and is faced with white and green marble (the latter from Prato), was erected on the site of a sumptuous Roman structure, possibly a Domus, using a considerable quantity of marble from Roman ruins.
The Baptistery was soon surrounded by houses that pressed in upon it from all sides, and was only released from this siege in the XIV century.
