Allen Pittman - Hoplology - Physical Training Traditions in Atlanta, Georgia (GA)
These performances of the “Ancient Greek Warrior Dance” at the Atlanta Greek Festival will take you back to the time of the warrior-poet, the Battle of Thermoplyea, and the clash of phalanxes on the plains of Marathon.
During September 24 - 27 of 1998, some students and I put together a reenactment of Hoplite warrior training and mock battle scene, entitled “The Ancient Greek Warrior Dance,” for Producer Joel Peddle and his Humanities Forum at the Atlanta Greek Festival.
We put on a total of 9 performances, preceded and followed by a powerful series of 18 lectures, presented by Joel Peddle on “The Context of the Ancient Greek Warrior.” Topics included: the Persian Wars, the role of the Pyrrhic Dance for communities and paideia, and the warrior as citizen, farmer and poet.

 the bane of my existence.
For the first time since 1992, Williamsport had an indoor drumline, and we competed in the Blue division in the Keystone Indoor Drill Association with our show of "Dances" (including Trepak - dance from the Nutcracker, Hungarian Dance #5, Russian Sailors Dance, and Sabre Dance).
In the end, neither of us got to go, but North took the States battle, and Williamsport took the Chapters battle.
It was quite different last year, especially since Williamsport was on the up and coming of the really awesome bands.

The Hunkpapa Sioux Chief, Sitting Bull, had returned from Canada with a promise of a pardon following the Battle at Little Bighorn and was an advocate of the Ghost Dance.
By November, the War Department sent troops to occupy the Lakota camps at Pine Ridge and Rosebud, convinced that the dancers were preparing to do battle against the government.
In reaction to the military encampment, the Lakotas planned various strategies to avoid confrontation with the soldiers, but the military was under orders to isolate Ghost Dance leaders from their devotees.

Sabre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Originally, the sabre was used as a cavalry weapon that gradually came to replace the various straight bladed cutting sword types on the battlefield.
In the American Civil War, the sabre was used infrequently as a weapon, but saw notable deployment in the Battle of Brandy Station and at East Cavalry Field at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.
The origins of the sabre are somewhat unclear, and it may come from designs such as the falchion or the scimitar (shamshir) used in the middle ages by such Central Asian cavalry as the Turks, Tatars, and Mongols.

Battle, well into a seven-week residency with the dance department, was sending students across the room in an elastic, explosive combination that had them soaring, laughing and occasionally crashing to the floor.
Battle, originally from Miami, has studied dance since the late 1980s, first at the New World School of the Arts in Miami, and then at the Juilliard School in New York.
Battle’s own movement style, in “Juba” and throughout his company’s current repertory, feels in its explosive, often aggressive attack — stamping, high-stepping, jumps, falls and even shouts — tribal, ritualistic and elemental.

His system, based on the belief that certain exercises contributed more to poise, grace, beauty and health, and were therefore more beneficial in improving performances in singing, drama and dance, gained popularity in dance and theatre as well as physical education, though in the latter its popularity was limited and short-lived.

The German system had a "militaristic" view of fitness, with a very strict, formal style of physical training: Jahn's purpose in promoting what he called the 'Turnverein' movement was to mold the German youth into strong citizens.
