Battle Beyond the Stars/Humanoids from the Deep: (James Horner) Imagine, for a moment, a time when film music collectors listened to James Horner's music in the theatres and not one of them compared that music to a previous Horner score.
Horner was lucky enough to be noticed by Roger Corman for use in the films represented on this album, and it is Battle Beyond the Stars which directly caused Horner's employment on Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and an acquaintence with Battle Beyond the Stars art director James Cameron.
Nevertheless, the score for Battle Beyond the Stars is a riot.

The Roger Corman-produced Battle Beyond the Stars (1980) translates The Seven Samurai and bits of The Magnificent Seven as a space adventure, which may sound clever, but the film never gels into a good B-picture.
Animator-turned-director Jimmy Murakami returned to animation after this effort, and while the direction is never clumsy, it's far too tame, though screenwriter John Sayles (in his early Corman period before he became an indie darling) milks the story for all it's worth.
