Manowar - Battle Hymns Review - sputnikmusic   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Over their career Manowar have come to be respected and laughed at in more or less equal measure, with a frequent response from first time listeners to their music being questions about whether or not the band can be serious.
Notable features from Battle Hymns include the two minute bass solo William's Tale and the 7 minute epic title-track that begins with a soft guitar part soon accompanied by a drum solo, that leads into the elevated 3 minutes before turning into a heavy, rhythmic movement.
Battle Hymns is where it all began, and it's a pretty good place to start.

Manowar was founded by Joey DeMaio and Australian-born axeman Ross the Boss (formerly of Dictators and Shakin' Street) in New York late 1980.
Manowar has become the natural concert-opener, and is truly a shredder (although not a very anthemic such, as one may believe), with a rocking quality perhaps only matched by Carry on, and an equally excelsior guitar solo.
It may be okay for bands like Manowar, who is always the main attraction where they play, and whose fans know and sing along to the songs, but I think many supporting acts would benefit from being more true to their album sounds.

Looking at the career of Manowar and their claim to be the truest of the metal bands and all their claims to this and that, it's actually quite amusing to sit down and LISTEN to them.
The album is extremely watered down compared to their three previous efforts, toning down the Manowar sound to try to appeal to a wider audience.
When listening to the album, it is quite obvious that this is the case; in fact, the generally poor sound combined with annoying speaker feedback takes most of the enjoyment out of the music.

Manowar engaged such topics as Manowars right to conquer and pillage the world, and of course, `naaaaaaammmmmmmmmm`.The early production is a bit basic, but the Metal is true, and the Metal screams are beyond the realms of the false ones.
Manowar were well and truly fucked off with false metal by now, and this album opens with the track All Men Play On Ten, which should be your guidance for the correct volume to listen to this at.
This is an album that tends to get overlooked, because there are no swords, barbarian women or blood on the cover, but dont think that means Manowar have held back, they are ready to mock the false ones and those who cry at not understanding True Metal.

With this album Manowar moved their sound in a more epic direction, and Columbus' thunderous and often dramatic style of drumming complements this perfectly.
The album starts off with a bang (literally, a sexual one though) with Warlord, a prime example of the "look how tough and heavy we are" songs they would continue recording forever.

Even many metalheads despise Joey DeMaio and co. Yeah, it´s true, their last albums aren´t worth a coin, but there is a past and a legacy of great albums that mustn´t be forgotten.
Manowar created their brand of metal in this album, and their classic traits can be found in some moments, like in the epic last song “Battle Hymn”, with that bombastic choruses (those synthesized “oooohs”, you know what I mean, sure).
“Battle Hymns” is a good album, always taking into account that it was recorded in 1982 and the band personality still was in progress.

Regardless, Kingdom of Steel remains one of the larger single-disc Manowar comps on the market -- containing the majority of their headbanging best.

Manowar's debut album is often seen as a mandatory metal release, so it's not surprising that some 20 years after its initial release, this remastered Silver Edition came out as a commemorative release.
There's only one track that sounds out of place, and from the liner notes it seems like this was also the opinion of reviewers back when the album was released: "William's Tale" is essentially the William Tell Overture played on bass.
"Battle Hymn" is one of the band's classic, pretty much mid-paced, epic as epics go, a very good performance by Eric Adams who is brought forward in the middle of the song where the instruments die down for a minute or so, only to come back stronger with the drums followed by a guitar solo.
