The GATE :: Review of 'Black Hawk Down'
In the ensuing 15-hour battle, 18 American soldiers died as they tried to reach the crash sites and retrieve all of their men.
In watching Black Hawk Down I actually felt a bit cheated that Bruckheimer, Scott and the writers couldn't have given more attention to the turmoil of the people of Mogadishu and shown more of the thoughts of the soldiers, and more of the actual history of the events.
Black Hawk Down, in comparison, is just a regular war movie, and not even a good one at that.

Battle of the Pelennor Fields - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An epic battle in his fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings, it was the greatest battle of the War of the Ring, and indeed the largest of the entire Third Age.
After the Battle of Osgiliath and the overrunning of the Rammas Echor, the last barriers against the forces of Mordor, the latter moved on the Pelennor Fields before the city on March 15, 3019 of the Third Age as the Great Darkness blotted out the sun.
In the battle proper, importance is given to the arrival of the Rohirrim, the combat with the Oliphaunts, and the deaths of Théoden and the Witch-king.

The battles of, Dagorlad, Orodruin, Fornost, Azanulbizar and Morannon
It appears that this battle (and later, during the seven-years siege of Barad-dûr, and the battle of Orodruin at the end of it, when Sauron comes out and fights with the kings) is a natural for concentrating on the heroic powers of individual champions and their magic weapons.
The first battle obviously hinges on the fact that the Witch-king underestimates the strength of his foes; not having heard adequate news of the arrival of the army of Gondor.
Fought near or on the same ground as the battle of Dagorlad, this is the final battle of the Third Age and the War of the Ring.

Far enough away from the battle to be safe from harm (although not far enough to avoid discovery), he and Frodo watch as Faramir leads his men in a rout of the servants of Sauron.
Unlike many other battles, in which the reader is given very little graphic description of the fighting, this battle is described in great detail: the ’swift stroke’ of Éowyn’s ’steel-blade’; the fall of the Nazgûl-Lord’s mace; each word spoken between the combatants; even to the shivering of shield and breaking of bone.

The Black Gate is more or less an effort to withstain Sauron's attention from that which matters most--Frodo's quest and *his?* completing the deed.

This assumption is based on the way in which Gandalf and Aragorn face the Battle of Morannon ("Black Gate") near the end of The Lord of the Rings.
The biggest difference between the heroes of the Battle of Morannon and those of Ragnarok is that Aragorn and the others show none of the good old Norse Gods' relish for the fight and little of the Rohirrim's delight in a warrior's death.
In most of the battles, good guys are far outnumbered by bad guys, and their chances of victory are usually slim to none.
