Battle of Cyzicus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Battle of Cyzicus (410 BC) was a naval battle in the Peloponnesian War.
In the wake of the Athenian victory at Abydos in November 411 BC, the Spartan admiral Mindarus sent to Sparta for reinforcements and began working with the Persian satrap Pharnabazus to plan for a new offensive.
Athens would win only one more naval battle in the war, at Arginusae, and their defeat at Aegospotami in 405 BC would bring the war to a close.

 Ancient Abydos: Holy Abydos
Modern visitors to the beautifully decorated temples at Abydos reenact the pilgrimage to this sacred place once made by many ancient Egyptians to fulfill their religious obligations in much the same way that Jerusalem has attracted worshipers of many faiths for the past two millennia.
For more than 3,000 years, Abydos was revered as a holy center where pharaohs and commoners participated in festivals and processions in honor of the gods, especially Osiris, ruler of the Egyptian underworld.
Explorers and archaeologists working at Abydos since the early nineteenth century have largely focused on the stone remains left behind by the ancient pilgrims, particularly the impressive buildings inscribed and decorated by kings and the high elite.

An equally intractable problem is the association of the eclipse with the battle.
It has to be admitted that there is another instance of Herodotus associating a battle with an eclipse which can be shown to have its basis in storytelling rather than historical accuracy (Mosshammer 1981, 151-53 and n.
In this case, one possibility would be to contemplate the continuation of the war between the Medes and the Lydians for some years after the "battle of the eclipse" thereby lowering the date of the peace treaty that was eventually drawn up between Astyages and Alyattes.

The first battle not described in Thucydides (Abydos, 410 B.C.), which Xenophon describes as succession of three stages, in Diodorus is amalgamated into one single event, depicted in a much more dramatic mood but with factual blunders such as the confusion of Tissaphernes and Pharnabazos, fused into one person also elsewhere in Diodorus (p.
