The Siege of Acre was the most important event of the Third Crusade, lasting from August 28, 1189 until July 12, 1191, and the first time in the history of the crusades that the king was compelled to personally see to the defence of the Holy Land.
After Saladin had decisively defeated the crusaders at the Battle of Hattin on July 4, 1187, he was able to conquer a great part of the Kingdom of Jerusalem with little opposition, among them the cities of Acre and (on October 2) Jerusalem itself.
The port of Acre lay on a peninsula in the Gulf of Haifa.

The wind-driven fire in the Green Swamp grew from 2,000 acres Saturday night and jumped I-4, a heavily traveled route between Tampa and Orlando.
A total of 1,230 fires have scorched 83,150 acres from the beginning of the fire season Jan. 1 through Saturday, according to the Florida Division of Forestry.

Although it was the Battle of Fort McHenry that inspired Francis Scott Key to pen “The Star-Spangled Banner,” memorializing the battle forever, many Dundalkians and historians feel the Battle of North Point was the more awe-inspiring and incisive standoff in the War of 1812.
Its primary vestige was Battle Acre, a lone acre of fenced-in land with a cannon in the middle, that is “desperately in need of repair,” said Michael Seufert, a re-enactor with the War of 1812 Royal Marines.
The acre, on the south side of Old North Point Road, was deeded to the state of Maryland in 1839 by its owner, Dr. Jacob Houck.
