  New Georgia Encyclopedia: Elijah Clarke (1742-1799)
As a lieutenant colonel in the state minutemen, Clarke received another wound at the Battle of Alligator Bridge, Florida.
Although he was not present at the battles at King's Mountain and Cowpens, his campaigns were partially responsible for both of those major patriot victories.
Besides receiving several battle wounds, Clarke also survived smallpox and the mumps during the Revolution.

O'Connell has watched the Alligator change over six decades, and the paper he sees today is very different from the one he remembers when he left office in 1973 - just as that newspaper was nothing like the one he worked for as a student.
While he did not always get along well with the student newspaper, he said he is proud to call himself "the emancipator of the Alligator," as he was president when the newspaper left campus and became independent in 1973.
Student government and the Alligator were never as close as they were in the 1930s.

Built in Philadelphia, the 47-foot long Alligator was primarily intended to counter the threat of the Confederate ironclad, the Virginia.
While being towed south for the battle, the Alligator had to be cut loose during a storm off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
In the Spring of 1863, at the same time that the Alligator was lost at sea, its inventor Brutus de Villeroi wrote the French Government from his home in Philadelphia in the hopes of selling a new design for a 125-foot long submarine--much more ambitious than the U.S. built Alligator.

The Alligator Point Tax Payers Association has recently developed a website it is at http://www.apta-fl.org/ we couldn't get everything to work, but did find it interesting, they seem to have some updated info on the marina and things.
Sopchoppy is probably the closest town to Alligator Point and the quickest way to get there is to take 98 west across the Ochlockonee Bay bridge and then turn north on surf road just after crossing the bridge, Sopchoppy is about 6 or 7 miles north of the intersection.
Alligator Point the TV Show, strange as it may seem there is a television show called Alligator Point, as of summer 2003 the pilot had been shot but it has not aired and it is not clear when or if it will air.

Her first mission was to destroy a bridge and clear obstructions on Virginia's Appomatox and James Rivers, respectively.
Unfortunately, neither river was deep enough to allow the Alligator to submerge and she was returned to the Washington Navy Yard.
Her current whereabouts are unknown, but an effort (launched in 2003) by the Office of Naval Research and NOAA could one day reveal the Secrets of the Alligator.
