Antrim was exposed to the inroads of the Danes, and also of the northern Scots, who ultimately effected permanent settlements.
ANTRIM, a market-town in the west of the county Antrim, Ireland, in the south parliamentary division, on the banks of the Six-Mile Water, half a mile from Lough Neagh, in a beautiful and fertile valley.
A battle was fought near Antrim between the English and Irish in the reign of Edward III.; and in 1642 a naval engagement took place on Lough Neagh, for Viscount Massereene and Ferrard (who founded Antrim Castle in 1662) had a right to maintain a fighting fleet on the lough.

At what precise period Antrim was erected into a county is uncertain: it was divided into baronies in 1584, by the lord-deputy, Sir John Perrot, but this arrangement was not until some time afterwards strictly observed.
Along the coast are 16 coast-guard stations, -- 8 in the district of Ballycastle, having a force of 8 officers and 54 men, -- and 8 in the district of Carrickfergus, with a force of 8 officers and 51 men; each district is under the control of a resident inspecting commander.
With the exception of a diversified district on the eastern coast and the entire vale of Lagan, nearly the whole is occupied by basaltic beds, presenting abrupt declivities on the eastern and northern coasts, which are truly magnificent.

The Battle of the Nile was fought in Aboukir bay near Alexandria, Egypt, on the 1st and 2nd of August 1798.
In this battle of annihilation the British suffered 213 killed and 677 wounded, the French lost 1400 killed and 600 wounded (figures from Lewis 'A Social History of the Navy').
The Enemy were moored in a strong Line of Battle for defending the entrance of the Bay, (of Shoals,) flanked by numerous Gun-boats, four Frigates, and a Battery of Guns and Mortars on an Island in their Van; but nothing could withstand the Squadron your Lordship did me the honour to place under my command.

The sheer size of the Antrim estate meant that from the beginning of the 17th century large areas were let as "Fee Farm" grants, effectively permanent leases at a fixed rent.

The main body of Williamite infantry was concentrated on fording the river at the village of Oldbridge, which was approached by a deep and sheltenng glen.
The Battle of the Boyne is recalled each July in the celebrations of the Orange Order, not on the first day but on "the Twelfth", for eleven days were lost with the change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in 1752.

From Timahoe William Aylmer led another attack on the town of Kilcock forcing the yeomanry to retreat.
General Champagne met with Lieutenant Tyrrell (High Sherrif of Meath) of Clonard to devise a plan to attack the rebel camp at Timahoe.
The rebels were routed with more than 200 killed as against around 20 on the government side.

In 1828 the Route Presbytery established a preaching station near Cloughmills for “Presbyterians in Drumadoon, Killagan and Loughgiel” and a request from the Presbyterians of Ballyweaney for a separate congregation in 1835 where their first minister was installed in 1840.
The earliest record of Clough was in the minutes of what was known as the Antrim Meeting, which then served the purpose of a Presbytery.

He became a United Irishman in 1795 and was arrested on suspicion the following year, spending fifteen months in Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin.
When the insurrection broke out in June 1798, McCracken was made general of the forces mustered at Donegore, which then attacked Antrim town.
They were defeated by government troops; after a month on the run McCracken was captured in Carrickfergus, and tried for treason and hanged in the Cornmarket, Belfast, on the same day: 17th July 1798.
