Battle of Arnhem - Operation Market Garden
The Battle of the Arnhem was part of Operation Market Garden, an audacious plan by Field Marshall Montgomery to thrust across the Rhine, the last natural barrier before entering Germany.
The final bridge at Arnhem, the ultimate goal of Market Garden, was entrusted to General Roy Urquhart and his 1st British Airborne Division.
The efforts of the 1st Airborne, holding Arnhem for four days and resisting at Oosterbeek against superior enemy firepower while equipped with insufficient supplies and ammunition and enduring severe lack of sleep was nothing short of heroic.

Operation Market Garden (Battle of Arnhem)
Montgomery instead suggested an attack north to Arnhem, deep inside the Netherlands, which would bypass the Siegfried Line (which stopped about 20km south of there), cross the Rhine, and capture the entire German 15th army behind their lines between Arnhem and the shores of the IJsselmeer.
By this point much of the battle area was now in allied hands, and it appeared all of the problem was at the north end of the line with 30 Corp. As soon as the 43rd arrived things would be in better shape, and the Guards Armored could attempt to retake the Arnhem bridge.
There seems little reason to suspect the same wouldn't have been true of Arnhem and Nijmegen, but with the troops over an hour's march away, or told to do other things, there was little hope of their success.
