Hermann von Boyen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He served in the war of 1806 on the General Staff of the Duke of Brunswick, and was wounded at the Battle of Auerstädt (14 October 1806).
The events of 1813 saw him recalled to the Prussian service: as a colonel he accompanied the Russian army from its base in Kalisz to Saxony.
After the Battle of Lützen (2 May 1813) he had charge of the border guards and ultimately the defence of Berlin.

 Military History Press Book Offer
The battle of Auerstädt came early in the campaign, barely a week after the war had begun, and the Third Corps was in perfect condition.
After the war was over, in the relative peace of the second half of 1807 and 1808, Davout and his staff prepared an official report on the operations of the Third Corps which was presented to Napoleon on 9 January 1809.
So much of the military history of the period (and of most other periods) has been written exclusively from the viewpoint either of the eagle or the worm that it is a revelation of to find such a rich source of material relating to the intermediate levels of command.

The twin battles of Jena and Auerstedt (older name: Auerstädt) were fought on October 14, 1806 on the plateau west of the river Saale in today's Germany, between the forces of Napoleon I of France and Frederick William III of Prussia.
The battle proved most influential in demonstrating the need for liberal reforms in what was then still a very much feudal Prussian state and army.
Hegel considered this battle to be "the end of the history", in terms of evolution of human societies towards what we would call the " liberal democracy ".

 Davout's Orders
Although many marshals and generals of the Napoleonic Wars have left memoirs of the events they participated in, they rarely include actual sets of orders that they received that led up to these events.
Fortunately for the historian this is not the case for the battle of Auerstädt.
The following are the orders Marshal Davout received from Imperial Headquarters in the week prior to the battle and in some cases his response to those orders.

 Napoleon's Finest
Napoleon's Grande Armée of 1805–1807 was one of history's greatest armies, and the 3rd Corps under the command of Marshal Louis Davout achieved feats of arms seldom if ever equaled in the annals of military history.
Davout's command reached its apogee of glory on 14 October 1806 at the celebrated Battle of Auerstädt.
His analysis of Lee at Gettysburg has generated a wide reappraisal of the traditional understanding of the famous battle, a considerable achievement given the number of volumes already written on the subject, and, as such, is a landmark contribution to Civil War history.
