 The Age of the Samurai - Minamoto no Yoritomo, Shogun 1192-1199
After suffering defeat at the battle of Ishibashiyama in 1180 Yoritomo put military affairs into the hands of his more capable brother Yoshitsune and cousin Yoshinaka: both were excellent generals.
At Awazu Yoshinaka in 1184 was defeated and made a last stand with his most loyal companions and eventually died from an arrow wound.
Yoshitsune went on to ensure Yoritomo's position by crushing the Taira at the famous battle of Ichinotani and then annihilating the clan's last remnants in 1185 at the naval battle of Dan no Ura, which ultimately ended the Gempei Wars.

Once Nitta Yoshisada’s troops were in the city the battle became a fierce hand-to-hand struggle among the burning houses, while the Hojo forces were torn between holding the passes and resisting the new advance round the cape.
When the battle was seen to be lost, the Hojo family and their closest retainers decided to die like true samurai, and the Taiheiki has preserved the gory record of their departure.

The film was slow paced at first but picked up at the end with a descent battle scene (which was too short IMHO).
The battle was interesting, but the main thing going for it was that, in the spirit of a good number of kaiju films, the fight is not what drives the movie, it's the human condition.

At this point, the film does a reasonably good job of living up to its intentions, which is to create a nostalgic vibe by echoing familiar motifs from classic kaijur films.
The battle - set partly in outer space - is reasonably well realized, with some flashy, eye-catching action, and the whole thing even ends on a touching note of sacrifice
The result is a nice little homage that should be of interest to fans of this particular sub-genre.
