In response to this, officers of the Japanese Kwantung Army, manufactured the Battle of Lugou Bridge (also known as the "Marco Polo Bridge Incident") on July 8, 1937, which succeeded in provoking a conflict between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan, the Sino-Japanese War.
At the Battle of the Java Sea, in late February and early March, the Japanese Navy inflicted a resounding defeat on the main ABDA naval force, under Admiral Karel Doorman.
The result was the indecisive Battle of Coral Sea, the first of the great carrier duels as the two fleets never came within sight.

Luck ran out for her in 1944 when she was sunk in Surigao Strait October 25th 1944 by the USS McDermutt and USS Hutchins during the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
