The town was the site of the Battle of Barnet in 1471, where Yorkist troops led by King Edward IV killed the rebellious "Kingmaker" Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick and Warwick's brother, John Neville, 1st Marquess of Montagu.
Barnet is the highest point on the old Great North Road between the City of London and York, which sounds impressive, but is a mere 130 metres above mean sea level.
Barnet is 10.5 miles (16.9 km) north north-west of Charing Cross.

Once battle was joined, it was a question of slogging away to the bitter end, which is why morale, confidence, and the steadying influence of veterans and valiant commanders were so important in deciding the day.
The ring in question was a possession of the Crown, from the time of the battle until George IV gave it to a 'lady friend' as a present and shows every indication of having been the property of Richard Neville and dating from the late 15th.

The two armies were evenly matched in numbers, but Warwick was expecting support from his son-in-law, (Click link for more info and facts about George, Duke of Clarence) George, Duke of Clarence, who happened to be Edward's brother and hurried to make his peace with the latter.
Instead, Edward's victory enabled him to consolidate and prepare himself for the final confrontation against the Lancastrian royal family - the (The final battle of the War of the Roses in 1471 in which Edward IV defeated the Lancastrians) Battle of Tewkesbury.

CHIPPING BARNET, (or High Barnet) a parish and market town, chiefly in the hundred of Cashio, in the county of Hertford, but partly in the hundred of Edmonton, in the county of Middlesex, 11 miles to the N.E. of London, and 8 S. from Hatfield.
An obelisk in commemoration of the battle was erected in 1740.
Barnet is the seat of a Poor-law Union and of a County Court district, and petty sessions are held here.

The Battle of Barnet was one of the key engagements of the Wars of the Roses, resulting in the removal from the scene of one leading character, Warwick the Kingmaker, and the establishment of another, Edward IV, firmly on the throne of England.
One side in the battle was a loose Lancastrian alliance led by the Earl of Warwick, comprising his own Neville retainers, his brother the Marquess Montague (who had recently changed sides) and the “old Lancastrian” Duke of Exeter and Earl of Oxford.

To determine the Army proportions for this battle I decided to go with percentages instead of trying to be accurate to the hundredth man. Most sources are similar in giving the Yorkists approximately 70% of the Lancastrian strength so I believe a 4:3 ratio is appropriate so that the scenario remains balanced and playable.
Oxford broke Hastings battle and his troops seized upon the Yorkist trains but as he gathered his troops back his star was mistaken as Edward's sun creating confusion and cries of "Treason!" Warwick killed Montagu, his own brother on the field because it became apparent that the young marquis was to declare for Edward.

The battle was fought in dense fog that caused utter confusion.
Barnet is a contest between two similar forces but with Warwick’s army being larger at around 13,000 compared to Edward’s total of around 10,000 men.

As members of the Handown Free Bowmen, the Grovers, who live in Southfields, Hendon, are taking part in the first ever reconstruction of the Battle of Barnet to be held in the borough.
The original battle between the Lancastrians, led by the Earl of Warwick, and the Yorkists, under the command of King Edward IV, took place on Hadley Green in 1471 and involved up to 50,000 soldiers.
The dents in his armour, which cost £1,700 second-hand, bear witness to the realism of the fighting and the 35-year-old is looking forward to being killed twice over the weekend as the Earl of Warwick.
