Battle of Bastogne - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Battle of Bastogne was a smaller battle in and around the Belgian town of Bastogne, during the larger Battle of the Bulge.
During the battle, German divisions surrounded and attempted to capture Bastogne.
The Battle of the Bulge, which was mainly tank-based for the Germans, was fuel intensive.

Bastogne (Municipality, Province of Luxembourg, Belgium)
Bastogne is mostly known for the cyclist race Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the oldest of the "classic" races, and the terrible battle which took place there in 1944-1945.
Bastogne and its region were then very wealthy: oak bark was exported to England, wood from the forests was shipped to the collieries.
In 2002, Joël Robert, from Bastogne, proposed to erect a commemorative monument in the former cemetary.

Chapter 19-THE ARDENNES: BATTLE OF THE BULGE
The battles already described were now coming to a close on the roads, in the villages, and through the woods east of the town as the 101st was taking its stance.
The enemy drive across the south face of Bastogne and on to the west during the night of 20 December did not immediately jolt McAuliffe's command; it was rather a disparate series of clashes with scattered and unsuspecting units of the VIII Corps.
Bastogne was sizable enough to have some reserve civilian stocks, and the melange of armor, engineers, and artillery units around the city had-supplies and ammunition in their own vehicles.

MilitaryHistoryOnline.com - Fortunes of War - Battle of Bastogne
Bastogne was the headquarters of General Troy Middleton's VIII Corps and was a major objective from the start of the offensive, containing as it did, the junction of no less than seven major roads communicating with all parts of the area.
The 101st Airborne column arrived in Bastogne by 0900 Dec 19th, due largely to a fortuitous decision made by Col. Sherburne, the Division Artillery commander, who was in charge of, and leading the column, which was heading for the town of Werbomont, north of Bastogne.
As the leading elements of the 101 Airborne moved into Bastogne, Combat Command B of the 10th Armored Division was also arriving, and survivors of the 110th Infantry and some combat Engineers and Combat Command R of the 9th Armored Division were being forced west into the outskirts of the town as well.

Belgium Guide - Province of Luxembourg : Bastogne
The 'Battle of the Bulge', as it is known, started on 16th December 1944 when 250,000 German soldiers, and 1.000 tanks re-invaded Belgium in a desperate attempt to reverse the tide of the war.
Belgium had already been lilberated by the U.S. forces and Bastogne was defended by the 101st Airborn Division under the command of General A.C. McAuliffe.
Bastogne is not unlike Ypres at the opposite end of the country, in that it is famous for its war memorials.

But once the defense of St. Vith was set up, that defense also bolstered the defense of the northern shoulder, as both defenses forced the German columns off of their planned routes and led to considerable congestion as the German columns were then funneled in between the northern shoulder and the St. Vith salient.
Bastogne did not become surrounded by forces intent on taking it until the night of December 21, Day 6 of the Battle of the Bulge.
Heroic as the deeds of the defenders of Bastogne were, the defense of Bastogne is a very important secondary element but not one of the true strategic keys to the German failure.

The Ardennes: Battle of the Bulge - Wikisource
But most of all it is the story of the American fighting man and the manner in which he fought a myriad of small defensive battles until the torrent of the German attack was slowed and diverted, its force dissipated and finally spent.
Thus the reader is introduced on 16 December 1944 to battles fought by companies and platoons because they are meaningful and because the relative importance of these actions is as great as operations conducted by regiments or even divisions later in the story.
The Ardennes battle normally was "fought," in the sense of exercising decisive command and directing operations, by the corps commander.

MilitaryHistoryOnline.com - Battle of Leyte Gulf Revisited
And because "The Battle for Leyte Gulf" didn’t change the situation on the ground in any important way, it can’t go down as a major victory unless the largely unknown fifth battle is included as part of it.
It was that battle that determined the final fate of the Japanese in the central Philippines.
Since the purpose of the Battle for/of Leyte Gulf was to secure the Gulf area, any fair-minded assessment has to include the contributions of Army land forces—particularly the 77th Division, destroyer squadrons that raided enemy re-supply bases on the island, and Marine Fighter-Bomber groups that dealt heavy blows to Japanese shipping.

The Siege and Relief of Bastogne During the Battle of the Bulge
The immediate mission, assigned by the higher command after the Verdun meeting, was the "relief" of Bastogne and the use of its road net as a sally port for a drive by the Third Army to St. Vith in the larger Allied offensive.
Bastogne, with seven entrant roads, naturally dominates the road complex in this area whether movement be from east to west, as attempted by the XLVII Panzer Corps, or from south to north, as planned for the American III Corps.
The Bastogne garrison knew little of the German deployment beyond the encircling units in direct contact, while the VIII Corps' screen, behind which the III Corps was forming, had been too weak to fight for information.
