The Battle of Warsaw (sometimes referred to as the Miracle at the Vistula, Polish Cud nad Wisłą) was the decisive battle of the Polish-Bolshevik War (also known as the Polish-Soviet War), the war that began soon after the end of World War I in 1918 and lasted until the Treaty of Riga in 1921.
The Battle of Warsaw was fought between 13 and 25 August, 1920, as Red Army forces commanded by Mikhail Tukhachevski approached the Polish capital of Warsaw and the nearby Modlin Fortress.

Fighting broke out in 1919, when self-organized Polish military units in Kresy ("Borderland") areas of Lithuania, Belarus and western Ukraine clashed with local communist units and Bolshevik forces attacking from the east.
The southern sector, from the Pripyat River to the town of Szczytno, was assigned to Grupa Podlaska (the Podlaska Group, later known as Grupa Poleska), commanded by General Antoni Listowski.

The book deals essentially with the forceful attempt by the Poles, to change the Germans who were living in the new won territories to become Polish citizens, or to make life so miserable for them that they would leave the land on their own and migrate to the West, to Germany.

In Zhmerynka, Bar and Birzula in 1919 I have often saw signs on the workshops with this surname.
He joined Ukrainian Galician Army, crossed river Zbruch with this army and in a battle, surrounded, did not surrender and was cut up with swords.
It was interesting to observe processions to commemorate anniversaries of the battles of Sich Riflemen against Muscovites.
