The Town of Bladensburg is a residential suburb of Washington, D.C., on the Anacostia River.
Bladensburg was a busy port, shipping out flour and tobacco, until the river silted up by 1800.
Incorrect deductions were drawn on the fact that the British troops maneuvered to give the Americans the impression that Baltimore was their destination, and General Armstrong could not be convinced that Washington would be the target of the invasion and not Baltimore, an important center of commerce.

While not as many people died in the Battle of Bladensburg as in the Titanic sinking, it is not a "body count" that makes the Battle of Bladensburg as interesting as it is. Indeed, there were not many people killed in the entire War of 1812 compared to other wars America has suffered.
There is an estate in Bladensburg that existed at the time of the battle, but it is privately owned and only opened to the public at certain times of the year.

The first of the battle’s players to reach Bladensburg on August 24 was Brigadier General Stansbury in command of 2,200 Baltimore militiamen, which he placed in a wedge shaped formation on the western side of the Potomac River’s East Branch.
For some unrecorded reason, upon arriving at Bladensburg, Monroe was dissatisfied by Stansbury’s placement of the second line and apparently thought himself invested with the authority to move it; unfortunately, so did the officers in the line, awed no doubt, my Monroe’s position as a member of the President’s cabinet.
The Battle of Bladensburg, at times referred to as The Battle for Washington was over, and Ross had yet to even deploy his third Brigade.

There is no recognition given the Battle by the town of Bladensburg itself as of this writing, and never has been.
The only connection to be found in town is a house of that period (still standing and well preserved) that can be viewed on an appointment basis when available, but that is seldom and only to groups as it is a functioning, private home.
