Topic: Battle of Blanchetaque

 [No title]
The Hundred Years War, of which Crecy was the first major land battle, arose out of the rivalry between Philip VI of France and Edward III of England.
In these early years of fighting the one decisive action was the naval battle of Sluys of June 24, 1340, which for a generation at least gave the English command of the Channel and therefore the ability to mount expeditions to invade France with relatively little fear of interference.
Tactically, the battle of Crecy established the supremacy of the long bow on the battlefields of Europe and gave England the standing of a great military power.

The Battle of Agincourt formed the climax of Henry V's invasion of France in 1415, and was practically the last great English martial achievement of the Hundred Years' War.
The Battle of Agincourt cost France at least half the nobility, including the Constable, 3 dukes, 90 lords and 1,560 knights besides a host of men-at-arms and cross bowmen.
The English losses were astonishingly light - but included in their number the stout Duke of York, commander of the left wing, who was stifled in his armor beneath a pile of slain - a fate that befell many more on the field.

 ospreysamurai.com - Knights and Samurai
At the second battle of Uji in 1184 two samurai vied for the honour of being the first to swim his horse across the river and into action, which one won by telling the other that his saddle girth was loose.
The result of these different traditions was that the battle of Cerignola in 1503, where volleys of European arquebuses pierced knightly armour for the first time, was effectively a repeat of the Crécy and Agincourt experience using stronger weapons of offence and defence.
However, the battle of Nagashino in 1575, which was Japan's Cerignola, was far more of a radical change because mounted samurai had never had to contend with any sort of missile volleys.

Battle of Crécy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the battle, the French knights, protected by mail reinforced with plate, nearly exhausted by having to walk through a quagmire of mud to charge uphill into English arrow storms, were cut down by bodkin arrows.
As in later battles, while the longbowmen could not easily penetrate the knights' much-improved armor, they found flank areas of the opposition's horses which were unprotected and killed or disabled their mounts, leaving the knights floundering about on foot.
The battle is seen by many historians as the beginning of the end of chivalry; during the course of the battle, many of the prisoners and wounded were killed.

As the French crossed the bridge and began to expand their bridgehead on the north bank of the Sambre further battles were fought at Gosselies and Gilly to slow the French advance and buy time for Prussian units to cross ahead of the French columns and rejoin the main army at Ligny.
These battles are usually completely ignored in histories as they didn't involve any British troops, although in terms of generalship they are probably the most amazing exploits of the entire campaign.
My point would merely be to say that it wouldn’t be surprising that the Tsar, moreover if fearing his vassals to be indocile, gathered his (and their) troops close to the capital, doing the same as Philippe, and furthermore kept an eye on his vassals, in the fear that they wouldn’t answer a later call.
