The film aims to be an historically accurate account of the Battle of Britain, when in the summer and autumn of 1940 the British RAF inflicted a strategic defeat on the Nazi Luftwaffe and so ensured the cancellation of Operation Sealion - Hitler's plan to invade Britain.
The film is notable for its portrayal of the Germans by subtitled German-speaking actors.
Filming was carried out at four airfields, Duxford, Debden, North Weald and Hawkinge, all of which were operational RAF stations during the actual Battle of Britain.

 Battle of Britain
The Battle of Britain was not the first major battle to be fought entirely in the air, as the British mainland had already suffered a campaign of attacks by Zeppelins and long range bombers during World War I.
However, the battle was the largest and most sustained bombing campaign yet attempted and the first real test of the strategic bombing theories that had emerged since the previous World War.
Britain later served as a base from which Operation Overlord, aka the Battle of Normandy, was launched against Nazi forces in Europe.

 Encyclopedia: Battle of Britain (film)
The film sticks to the orthodox view of the battle - that the German's threw away their tactical advantages by switching bombing away from RAF airfields to terror bombing of London in revenge for RAF raids on Berlin.
The film is notable for its portrayal of the Germans by subtitled German-speaking actors, and for being generally faithful to the real historical events.
The film is also notable for its spectacular flying sequences, echoing those seen in Angels One Five (1952), but on a far grander scale than had been seen on film before.

Despite the success of Dowding's measured response, soon after the Battle of Britain some proponents of the Big Wing[?] theory would complain that large numbers of RAF fighters should have been gathered together to strike German attacks with greater force.

There was not a clear-cut victory in the Battle of Britain, indeed the German night offensive continued into 1941 and fighter sweeps and 'tip and run' raids were common in southern England until 1944.
The film "Battle of Britain" therefore serves as a fitting tribute to the Allied and German aircrew who fought over the English Channel and southern England in the summer of 1940.

Guy Hamilton’s "Battle Of Britain" was one move I had been waiting for to be released on DVD for the longest time and when it finally arrived on my doorstep I was very eager to see how it turned out.
Britain’s resources were drained from years of supporting their allies on the continent, such as France and the Benelux countries, and when Hitler’s armies finally took aim of Britain, there was a good chance they would simply overpower the country with their brute force approach.
"Battle of Britain" is a magnificent movie with some of the most amazing aerial footage ever banned on celluloid.

In a year when one of the finest epic cantatas composed for film is rejected by no less arbitrary a force than a focus group composed of seventeen people, it's hard to believe there was a time when the final decision regarding the fate of a composer's work was placed in even fewer hands.
His signature sound from those scores is instantly recognisable in the "Battle of Britain Theme", a martial piece with machine-gun like snare drums and a brass melody that seems to scream adventure in its short opening arrangement.
His theme for the English heroes ("Battle of Britain March", "Finale: Battle of Britain March") is more a ceremonial than a march — so filled with Elgarian optimism that one can easily imagine a coronation taking place to it.
