 SKELTON, 1798
Two hundred years have passed since Bunclody shook to the sound of cannon ball and grapeshot as the King's troops dislodged the Insurgent forces from the town on 1 June 1798.
It was not called Bunclody then, but Newtownbarry and if you are searching history's pages looking for a reference to the battle, you must, of necessity, look for it under the latter name.
The real battle was between the powerful privileged class on one side and on the other, those who wanted civil and religious liberty under a new order of Republicanism.

A fascination with stage battles, battle-dress and the weapons of war occupied much of my childhood.
In my version the Prussians didn't arrive to relieve the English but to help annihilate them; the `Indians' rarely lost a brave as they prevented the spread of the White man across the Americas; and the Norman castles of England, Scotland and Ireland were overrun regularly by native hordes.
Battles in which the Irish or Irish regiments were involved also attracted my attention, the American Civil War, the Fenian expeditions in North America, the revolts of the Irish in the early Australian colony, the role of the Irish at Fontenoy and more.

But Maureen Phibbs, who read a short poem at the unveiling, told of how it was only when her son happened to visit a library in Australia that she had learned that a great battle had taken place on this hill - and that the hill was called Blackamore Hill.
Though born and bred by the hillside, she had never heard tell of the battle, or its name.
